Physician Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a physician in Montana?
To practice as a physician in Montana, you must hold an active license issued by the Montana Board of Medical Examiners, which requires a medical degree from an accredited institution, completion of an accredited residency, and passing scores on the USMLE or COMLEX. Montana participates in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, which can streamline licensing for physicians already holding a license in a compact member state.
Which companies hire physicians in Montana?
Employers hiring physicians in Montana right now include Benefis Health System, Bozeman Health, and Logan Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's physician hiring is heavily anchored by integrated regional health systems that operate both urban medical centers and rural critical access hospitals across the state.
Which Montana cities have the most physician jobs?
Great Falls, Missoula, and Billings consistently see the highest concentration of physician openings in Montana. Billings leads as the state's largest city and a regional referral hub anchored by Billings Clinic and St. Vincent Healthcare, while Missoula draws volume through Providence St. Patrick Hospital and University of Montana-affiliated programs, and Great Falls serves as a central hub for north-central Montana's Benefis Health System network.
Are there remote physician jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're rare. About 18% of physician openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most clinical practice. The roles most likely to carry a remote or hybrid component are telehealth positions, psychiatric consultations, and utilization review or case management functions that do not require in-person patient contact.
How can I get hired as a physician in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is applying directly to residency or fellowship programs affiliated with Montana institutions, such as those connected to Billings Clinic or the University of Washington WWAMI program, which trains physicians for rural Pacific Northwest and Mountain West practice including Montana. New graduates without post-residency attending experience can target locum tenens placements through Montana's many critical access hospitals, which regularly onboard early-career physicians. Completing a rural medicine or primary care rotation in Montana and obtaining your Montana Board of Medical Examiners license before applying gives candidates a concrete advantage.
Where can I find and apply to physician jobs in Montana?
You can find and apply to physician jobs in Montana on Migrate Mate, which lists current Montana openings. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your specialty, experience level, and preferred location, and apply directly through the listing.
