Physician Jobs in Alabama: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a physician in Alabama?
To practice medicine in Alabama, you must obtain a license from the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners, the state authority that oversees physician licensure. The path requires completion of an accredited MD or DO program, passage of the USMLE or COMLEX licensing exams, and completion of an accredited residency. Alabama also requires a separate Controlled Substances Certificate for physicians who prescribe controlled medications.
Which companies hire physicians in Alabama?
Employers hiring physicians in Alabama right now include TeamHealth, Vohra Wound Physicians, and Huntsville Hospital Health System, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Alabama's largest health systems, academic medical centers, and federally qualified health centers are among the most consistent sources of physician openings across the state.
Which Alabama cities have the most physician jobs?
The Alabama cities with the most physician openings are Birmingham, Huntsville, and Cullman. Birmingham leads because UAB Health System and several large regional hospital networks are headquartered there, while Huntsville's rapid population growth has driven expansion at Huntsville Hospital, and Mobile's Infirmary Health anchors hiring along the Gulf Coast.
Are there remote physician jobs in Alabama?
Yes, but they're rare. About 20% of physician openings tied to Alabama are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how hands-on clinical care must typically be delivered in person. The roles most likely to offer remote components are telemedicine consultations, utilization review, and physician advisory positions within insurance or managed care organizations.
How can I get hired as a physician in Alabama with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path for physicians with limited experience is applying to residency or fellowship programs affiliated with UAB Health System or Huntsville Hospital, both of which train physicians across multiple specialties. New graduates can also look for hospitalist or urgent care positions that explicitly welcome board-eligible candidates, and rural health organizations operating under Alabama's State Loan Repayment Program often provide structured onboarding for physicians early in their careers.
