INTRODUCTION
The Production Planner is responsible for coordinating and optimizing production activities within a regulated medical and aerospace 3D printing manufacturing environment. This role serves as the central point of communication between production, customer service, engineering, quality, and supply chain teams to ensure on-time delivery of patient-specific and customer orders. The Production Planner develops and manages production schedules, monitors work-in-process (WIP), identifies risks, drives proactive problem-solving, and supports forecasting and capacity planning initiatives. The ideal candidate is highly organized, analytical, and capable of balancing competing priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing setting while maintaining compliance with quality and regulatory requirements.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Production Planning & Scheduling
- Create and maintain work orders, and production schedules to support daily manufacturing operations.
- Develop, review, and release production pull sheets for weekly shipments.
- Manage and update planning systems to ensure accurate visibility of production status and priorities.
- Monitor all customer work-in-process (WIP) and ensure jobs progress according to schedule.
- Perform schedule replanning and priority adjustments when production constraints, urgent customer needs, or operational disruptions occur.
- Prioritize customer orders and determine production sequencing to meet delivery commitments.
Customer Order & Shipment Management
- Coordinate shipment schedules and organize production activities to meet customer expectations and delivery requirements.
- Track customer orders throughout the production lifecycle and ensure alignment with committed due dates.
- Communicate order status, potential delays, and recovery plans to internal stakeholders.
- Identify at-risk orders and proactively develop mitigation plans to maintain customer service levels.
- Determine when duplicate builds or additional production runs are required to support delivery objectives.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Communicate due dates and schedule priorities to production schedulers and manufacturing teams.
- Collaborate with engineering, quality, production, customer service, purchasing, and logistics teams to resolve production issues.
- Coordinate with external vendors and suppliers to ensure materials, outsourced services, and deliverables support production schedules.
- Work closely with production leadership to maximize equipment utilization, machine runtime, and labor allocation.
- Escalate resource constraints and partner with operations teams to develop solutions that support on-time completion.
Forecasting & Capacity Planning
- Analyze production trends, historical performance, and demand patterns to support forecasting activities.
- Utilize forecast data to develop capacity plans for equipment, labor, and production resources.
- Evaluate production workloads and recommend schedule adjustments to optimize throughput and efficiency.
- Support long-range planning efforts by identifying future resource requirements and operational constraints.
Continuous Improvement & Problem Solving
- Proactively identify scheduling risks, bottlenecks, and production issues before they impact delivery performance.
- Lead problem-solving efforts when production triggers, delays, quality issues, or capacity constraints arise.
- Develop and implement process improvements that enhance planning accuracy, workflow efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
- Maintain planning metrics and provide regular reporting on schedule adherence, delivery performance, and production capacity.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Industrial Engineering, Business, or related field preferred.
- 3+ years of production planning, scheduling, manufacturing operations, or supply chain experience.
- Experience in medical device manufacturing, additive manufacturing (3D printing), regulated environments, or high-mix/low-volume production preferred.
- Strong understanding of production scheduling, capacity planning, forecasting, and inventory management principles.
- Experience with ERP, MRP, MES, or production planning systems.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data analysis tools.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of FDA, ISO 13485, GMP, or other regulated manufacturing requirements.
- Experience supporting patient-specific or customized medical product manufacturing.
- Familiarity with additive manufacturing technologies and production workflows.
- APICS/ASCM certification (CPIM or CSCP) preferred.
