Maintenance Technician Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a maintenance technician in Michigan?
Most Michigan employers hire maintenance technicians who hold a high school diploma or GED combined with a certificate or associate degree from a technical college such as Henry Ford College, Ferris State University, or Lansing Community College. For roles involving electrical work, Michigan requires a state-issued Electrical License through the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Apprenticeships through Michigan-based trade unions, including those affiliated with the IBEW, offer a paid path into the trade for those without prior experience.
Which companies hire maintenance technicians in Michigan?
Employers hiring maintenance technicians in Michigan right now include CBRE, LR Management, and Amsted Automotive, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Michigan's deep concentration of automotive plants, food and beverage manufacturers, and large healthcare systems means steady, year-round demand across both union and non-union facilities.
Which Michigan cities have the most maintenance technician jobs?
Detroit, Kalamazoo, and Grand Rapids account for the most maintenance technician openings in Michigan. Detroit drives the largest share through its dense concentration of automotive assembly plants, logistics hubs, and commercial real estate, while Grand Rapids draws openings from food manufacturing giants and healthcare campuses, and Lansing's state government facilities and mid-size manufacturers add consistent volume outside the major metros.
Are there remote maintenance technician jobs in Michigan?
Yes, but they're rare. Maintenance technician work is fundamentally hands-on and tied to physical equipment and facilities, which limits remote options. About 2% of maintenance technician openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those positions tend to involve remote monitoring, technical support, or equipment diagnostics rather than on-site repair and upkeep.
How can I get hired as a maintenance technician in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a maintenance helper or facilities assistant role, which large Michigan employers like General Motors and Whirlpool use as pipeline positions for developing in-house technicians. Community colleges such as Macomb Community College and Kalamazoo Valley Community College offer short-term maintenance and trades certificates that signal readiness to Michigan hiring managers. Apprenticeships through the Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council offer paid, structured training that leads directly to journeyman-level roles without requiring prior experience.
Where can I find and apply to maintenance technician jobs in Michigan?
You can find and apply to maintenance technician jobs in Michigan on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search for roles that match your experience and specialty, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
