Mental Health Counseling Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mental health counseling in New York?
To work as a licensed mental health counselor in New York, you must earn a master's degree in mental health counseling or a closely related field and obtain licensure through the New York State Education Department, which oversees the Licensed Mental Health Counselor credential. New graduates typically begin under the LMHC-LP (licensed permit) while completing the supervised post-degree hours required for full licensure. The National Counselor Examination is required as part of the process.
Which companies hire mental health counselings in New York?
Employers hiring mental health counselings in New York right now include Good Shepherd Services, Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services, and The Jewish Board, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's large integrated health systems, state-operated psychiatric facilities, and nonprofit community mental health organizations consistently post the highest volume of openings across the state.
Which New York cities have the most mental health counseling jobs?
Brooklyn, New York, and Bronx have the most mental health counseling openings in New York. New York City dominates the market due to its density of hospital systems, community behavioral health clinics, and school-based programs, while Buffalo and Albany see strong demand driven by regional medical centers and the concentration of New York State government-affiliated behavioral health agencies.
Are there remote mental health counseling jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many clinical fields, as telehealth expanded significantly for outpatient therapy and counseling. About 18% of mental health counseling openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the remote options concentrated in outpatient talk therapy, care coordination, and crisis line counseling rather than intensive in-person treatment or residential programs.
How can I get hired as a mental health counseling in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for counselor or case manager roles at community mental health centers while completing your LMHC-LP hours, since many New York nonprofits and clinic networks such as Comunilife, CAMBA, and the Institute for Community Living hire candidates who are still accumulating supervised experience. Lateral moves from case management, psychiatric rehabilitation, or peer support specialist roles are common stepping stones, and holding your LMHC-LP rather than waiting for full licensure gives you a significant edge over unlicensed applicants.
Where can I find and apply to mental health counseling jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to mental health counseling jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring in the state right now. Search the listings to see roles that match your experience level and specialty, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
