Job Summary:
As a pharmacy technician, you ensure patient safety by accurately preparing and dispensing medications. Your efficiency in managing inventory and processing prescriptions allows pharmacists to focus on patient care. By providing excellent customer service and medication guidance, you enhance patient satisfaction and adherence to treatment plans.
Key Position Details:
- FTE 1.0 (80 hours per two week pay period)
- 8-hour day/evening/night shift
- Every other weekend
- Variable day/evening/night shifts (8.5 hours with 30-minute meal break)
- Day shifts: Start times between 5:30 a.m. – 7:30 a.m. (staggered)
- Evening shifts: Start times between 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
- Night shifts: Start at 9:00 p.m., 10-hour shifts (7 on / 7 off rotation)
- Primary coverage: Day and evening shifts
- Night coverage: Voluntary for vacation/sick coverage; rare mandatory coverage as needed (training provided)
- Schedule: No set schedule; days off will vary
- Technician Levels: Three-tier structure (Tier I, Tier II, Tier III)
- Entry level: All new hires start at Tier I
- Advancement: Training into Tier II and Tier III based on departmental needs and seniority
- Floating: No floating required at Tier I level
- Travel (Tier II/III): Potential for occasional travel to off-site locations (e.g., WestHealth)
- New hires: Off-site travel not required initially
Job Description:
Provides basic drug distribution and drug preparation services. Checks pharmaceutical stock to determine inventory level, preparing labels, calculating quantities and other pharmaceutical therapies. Functions under the supervision of the pharmacist.
Principle Responsibilities
- Prepares medications.
- Prepares and selects medications for distribution.
- Prepares oral extemporaneous products.
- Performs bulk compounding.
- May process refill requests and prior authorizations.
- May perform data entry and adjudication.
- Manage and support automated drug distribution and drug inventory.
- Medication picking, delivery, and restocking to automated dispensing cabinets (ADC).
- Troubleshoots basic problems identified by ADC users and/or peers.
- Delivers and restocks controlled substances.
- Assists with returns, waste, and reporting/resolution of discrepancies.
- May perform daily ordering.
- May perform inventory management.
- May use wholesaler return programs and supports reverse distribution processes.
- Complete and document quality assurance activities.
- Monitors expiration dating.
- Ensures pharmacy environment is clean and free of clutter, safe, and presents a professional atmosphere.
- Reports discrepancies or inaccuracies to pharmacist or supervisor.
- May complete audits for days supply, signatures, dates, take as directed and returns-to-stock.
- May maintain records of invoices, reports, and other documents.
- Repackages and labels bulk medications or splits tablets into unit dose packaging.
- Creates labels using standard format.
- Fills and labels prepacking medications.
- Assigns expiration dates and maintains records.
- Packages appropriate quantities.
- May check medications for packaging accuracy.
- Provides customer service.
- Answers phone and directs calls to appropriate party
- May manage point of sale
- May Consult refill management program to ensure safe, timely, and cost-effective utilization of medications.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age with education and/or experience needed to meet required functional competencies as listed on the job description
- Minimum of six (6) months of pharmacy experience (inpatient or outpatient/retail), OR current national pharmacy technician certification (PTCB or NHA)
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Vocational or Technical Training from an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited pharmacy technician training program preferred
- 0 to 2 years pharmacy technician experience
Licenses/Certifications
- Registered Pharmacy Technician - MN Board of Pharmacy required upon hire
- Certified Pharmacy Technician - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board required within 12 months of Date of Hire (NHA or PTCB Pharmacy Technician Certification Board)

- Lifting weight up to 20 lbs. occasionally, up to 10 lbs. frequently
Pay Range
Pay Range: $22.37 to $32.65 per hour
The pay described reflects the base hourly pay range. Your starting rate would depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your experience, education, and the union agreement (if applicable). Shift, weekend and/or other differentials may be available to increase your pay rate for certain shifts or work.
