Principal Jobs in Delaware: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a principal in Delaware?
To become a principal in Delaware, you must earn a principal certification issued by the Delaware Department of Education. The path requires a master's degree in educational leadership or administration, completion of a state-approved preparation program, and a valid teaching license. Delaware does not administer a separate principal licensure exam but does require candidates to meet specific leadership experience and program standards before the certification is granted.
Which companies hire principals in Delaware?
Employers hiring principals in Delaware right now include CVS Health, JPMorganChase, and Exelon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Delaware's mix of traditional public districts, charter networks, and private independent schools means principal openings appear across a range of institution types throughout the state.
Which Delaware cities have the most principal jobs?
The Delaware cities with the most principal openings are Wilmington, Newark, and Delaware. Wilmington leads because it is home to the state's largest school districts and a dense cluster of charter schools, while Newark and Dover generate openings through their anchor public district offices and proximity to the state's major administrative and higher education institutions.
Are there remote principal jobs in Delaware?
Yes, but they're rare. Principal work is fundamentally on-site, requiring daily presence in a school building to lead staff, support students, and manage operations. About 45% of principal openings tied to Delaware are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to be in district-level or charter network administrative roles rather than building-level principalships.
How can I get hired as a principal in Delaware with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an assistant principal role, which serves as the primary pipeline for building-level leadership in Delaware. Large districts like Christina School District and Red Clay Consolidated School District regularly post assistant principal openings that consider strong department heads, instructional coaches, and lead teachers. Completing a Delaware-approved educational leadership preparation program and holding an active teaching license gives candidates a clear edge when applying to these bridge roles.
Where can I find and apply to principal jobs in Delaware?
You can find and apply to principal jobs in Delaware on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from districts, charter networks, and private schools across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to each employer through the listing.
