Professor Jobs in Alabama: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a professor in Alabama?
Becoming a professor in Alabama requires earning a terminal degree in your discipline, most commonly a doctorate, though an MFA or other professional degree qualifies in some fields. Alabama does not require a state-issued teaching license for higher education faculty. Candidates apply directly to Alabama institutions, and hiring departments assess scholarly credentials, teaching experience, and fit with the department's research focus or programmatic needs.
Which companies hire professors in Alabama?
Alabama professor roles are posted by Auburn University, University of Alabama, and Alabama A&M University and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Alabama's broad public university system, including flagship research campuses and regional HBCUs, accounts for the majority of sustained faculty hiring across the state.
Which Alabama cities have the most professor jobs?
Auburn University, Normal, and Birmingham have the most professor openings in Alabama. Tuscaloosa and Birmingham lead because the University of Alabama and UAB are among the state's largest employers, while Huntsville's growth as a research and defense technology hub has steadily expanded faculty demand at institutions like Alabama A&M University and UAH.
Are there remote professor jobs in Alabama?
Yes, but they're limited compared to fully desk-based fields, since most faculty roles involve in-person instruction, lab supervision, or student advising. About 13% of professor openings tied to Alabama are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those postings are most common in fully online degree programs and continuing education divisions where course delivery is designed for asynchronous formats.
How can I get hired as a professor in Alabama with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing an adjunct or visiting instructor position, which Alabama institutions regularly post to fill immediate teaching needs without requiring a full scholarly record. New doctoral graduates should target UAB, Auburn University, and the University of Alabama system, which hire postdoctoral fellows and visiting faculty as a pipeline to tenure-track roles. Building a teaching portfolio through graduate assistantships and publishing even one peer-reviewed article strengthens an application at Alabama's research-focused campuses.
Where can I find and apply to professor jobs in Alabama?
You can find and apply to professor jobs in Alabama on Migrate Mate, which lists current Alabama faculty openings across institutions and disciplines. Search the listings, find roles that match your credentials and teaching interests, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
