Program Development Manager Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a program development manager in New York?
Most program development manager roles in New York require a bachelor's degree in public administration, social work, nonprofit management, or a closely related field, with a master's degree preferred at larger organizations. There is no single state-issued license for this role, but New York employers in healthcare and social services frequently require relevant certifications such as the Certified Nonprofit Professional credential or compliance training specific to New York State contract management. Building experience through program coordinator or grants administrator roles at city agencies or nonprofits is the most common path.
Which companies hire program development managers in New York?
Employers hiring program development managers in New York right now include Amazon, EY, and DoorDash, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense concentration of major hospital networks, city and state government agencies, and large nonprofit organizations means hiring activity is steady across multiple sectors year-round.
Which New York cities have the most program development manager jobs?
The cities with the most program development manager openings in New York are New York, New York City, and Brooklyn. New York City dominates because of its scale of nonprofit organizations, hospital systems, and city government agencies, while Albany's concentration of state government offices and advocacy organizations drives significant hiring upstate, and Buffalo's growing healthcare and community development sector contributes a consistent share of openings in western New York.
Are there remote program development manager jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles. Program development work is largely desk-based, involving planning, writing, data analysis, and stakeholder communication, which makes it well suited to remote or hybrid arrangements. About 36% of program development manager openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the flexibility many New York nonprofits and healthcare organizations now offer. Grant writing and strategic planning functions are the most consistently remote parts of the role.
How can I get hired as a program development manager in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a program coordinator or grants associate role at a New York City nonprofit, city agency, or SUNY-affiliated research office, where you build hands-on experience in program design and funder reporting. Large New York employers including the New York City Department of Social Services and major hospital systems like NYC Health and Hospitals run associate and fellowship programs that develop program staff from the ground up. A master's degree in public administration or social work, or a portfolio of grant-funded projects from academic or volunteer work, gives candidates a concrete edge.
