Project Program Manager Jobs in Alabama: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project program manager in Alabama?
Most project program managers in Alabama enter the field with a bachelor's degree in business administration, engineering, or information systems, then pursue the Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute. There is no state-issued license specific to Alabama for this role. Employers in Huntsville's defense corridor frequently value DoD program management experience or a security clearance alongside the PMP, making those credentials a practical differentiator for advancing in the Alabama market.
How much do project program managers make in Alabama?
Project program managers in Alabama earn a median of about $100,820 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,550 for the lowest 10% to over $164,910 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project program managers in Alabama?
Companies currently hiring project program managers in Alabama include Lockheed Martin, Airbus, and Alabama A&M University, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Alabama's defense and aerospace base, anchored in Huntsville, means a disproportionate share of openings sit with federal contractors and systems integrators operating near Redstone Arsenal.
Which Alabama cities have the most project program manager jobs?
Huntsville, Boaz, and Mobile account for the largest concentration of project program manager openings in Alabama. Huntsville leads because of its dense cluster of defense contractors and federal agencies tied to Redstone Arsenal and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, while Birmingham's large healthcare systems and financial institutions sustain steady demand, and Mobile's industrial and port-related construction activity supports project management roles in engineering and infrastructure.
Are there remote project program manager jobs in Alabama?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 33% of project program manager openings tied to Alabama are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how much of the role involves coordination, reporting, and stakeholder communication rather than on-site presence. The portions of the work most often done remotely include planning, budget tracking, and status reporting, while certain defense and construction programs require on-site presence due to security or physical oversight requirements.
How can I get hired as a project program manager in Alabama with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving from a project coordinator or project analyst role, which Alabama employers in healthcare and defense regularly hire without requiring extensive prior management experience. UAB Health System and major Huntsville contractors such as Leidos and SAIC often bring in coordinators who grow into program management. Earning a CAPM from the Project Management Institute while working in an adjacent operations or administrative role signals readiness and shortens the transition to a full project program manager title.
Where can I find and apply to project program manager jobs in Alabama?
You can find and apply to project program manager jobs in Alabama on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level, industry background, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
