Development Manager Jobs in Alabama: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a development manager in Alabama?
Most development manager roles in Alabama require a bachelor's degree in business, nonprofit management, public administration, or a closely related field, with a master's degree preferred at larger organizations. There is no single state-issued license for the role, but candidates pursuing nonprofit fundraising leadership often strengthen their standing through the Certified Fund Raising Executive credential. Alabama employers in healthcare, higher education, and economic development typically promote from within, so starting in a coordinator or associate-level development role is the most direct path.
How much do development managers make in Alabama?
Development managers in Alabama earn a median of about $135,890 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $55,490 for the lowest 10% to over $203,530 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire development managers in Alabama?
Companies currently hiring development managers in Alabama include Sanmina, Clayco, and Pilgrim's, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Alabama's mix of large healthcare systems, public universities, defense contractors, and regional nonprofits means demand for development managers is spread across several distinct sectors rather than concentrated in one industry.
Which Alabama cities have the most development manager jobs?
Huntsville, Birmingham, and Alabama lead Alabama in development manager openings. Birmingham drives the largest share of listings given its concentration of major hospital systems, financial institutions, and regional nonprofits headquartered there, while Huntsville's growing defense and technology corridor generates consistent demand, and Mobile's port economy and healthcare anchors sustain a steady pipeline of openings in economic and organizational development.
Are there remote development manager jobs in Alabama?
Yes, and more than in many comparable management roles. About 20% of development manager openings tied to Alabama are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the desk-based and relationship-driven nature of much of the work. Grant writing, donor stewardship, and program strategy functions are the most frequently offered in fully remote or hybrid arrangements, while roles requiring direct community engagement or on-site team oversight tend to remain in-person.
How can I get hired as a development manager in Alabama with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a development coordinator or grants associate role at one of Alabama's large nonprofits, health systems, or public universities, where organizations like UAB, Children's of Alabama, and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham regularly bring on entry-level development staff. Building a portfolio that demonstrates successful grant applications or donor cultivation, even from volunteer or part-time work, closes the experience gap quickly. Earning the Certified Fund Raising Executive credential while in an entry-level position signals professional seriousness and accelerates promotion consideration.
Where can I find and apply to development manager jobs in Alabama?
You can find and apply to development manager jobs in Alabama on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level, sector preference, and location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
