Project Program Manager Jobs in Hawaii: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project program manager in Hawaii?
The most direct path in Hawaii is earning a bachelor's degree in business, engineering, or a related field, then pursuing the Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute, which is the credential Hawaii's largest employers in defense and healthcare consistently require. Hawaii has no state-issued license for this role. Candidates targeting federal or defense positions at Pearl Harbor or Hickam installations should also pursue a security clearance early, as it significantly expands hiring access.
How much do project program managers make in Hawaii?
Project program managers in Hawaii earn a median of about $78,000 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $53,930 for the lowest 10% to over $150,440 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project program managers in Hawaii?
Companies currently hiring project program managers in Hawaii include Hawaii Medical Service Association, SAIC, and YWCA, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hawaii's defense and federal contracting sector, anchored on Oahu, drives a significant share of these openings alongside major healthcare networks and state government agencies.
Which Hawaii cities have the most project program manager jobs?
Honolulu, Oahu Island, and Kīhei account for the largest share of project program manager openings in Hawaii. Honolulu dominates due to its concentration of federal agencies, defense contractors, and large hospital systems, while Pearl City and Kapolei draw hiring from military installations and growing commercial and infrastructure development on Oahu's west side.
Are there remote project program manager jobs in Hawaii?
Yes, and more than most fields, since project program management is largely desk-based and communication-driven. About 27% of project program manager openings tied to Hawaii are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, though roles tied to federal contracts or on-site construction programs typically require in-person presence. Program coordination, reporting, and stakeholder management work are the functions most likely to be offered remotely.
How can I get hired as a project program manager in Hawaii with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a project coordinator or project analyst role within Hawaii's healthcare or state government sector, where institutions such as The Queen's Health Systems and the Hawaii Department of Health regularly bring on coordinators who learn program management on the job. Earning a CAPM certification from the Project Management Institute signals commitment before you have years of experience, and volunteering to lead internal projects at your current employer builds a concrete portfolio that Hawaii hiring managers respond to.
Where can I find and apply to project program manager jobs in Hawaii?
You can find and apply to project program manager jobs in Hawaii on Migrate Mate, which lists current Hawaii openings across industries including defense, healthcare, and government. Search the listings to find roles that match your background and apply directly to the ones that fit your experience level and preferred location on the islands.
