Seo Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a seo manager in California?
Most seo managers in California start with a bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, or a related field, then build two to four years of hands-on SEO experience before stepping into a management role. California does not require a state-issued license to work in this field. Employers here typically look for a portfolio of measurable organic growth results, familiarity with technical SEO, and experience managing campaigns for competitive industries like technology or retail.
How much do seo managers make in California?
Seo managers in California earn a median of about $94,700 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $48,440 for the lowest 10% to over $181,600 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire seo managers in California?
Employers hiring seo managers in California right now include Zymo Research, Mindgruve, and Sunny Distributor, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense concentration of technology companies, media brands, and direct-to-consumer retailers means demand for seo managers is spread across a wide range of industries and company sizes.
Which California cities have the most seo manager jobs?
Tustin, San Francisco, and San Jose have the most seo manager openings in California. Los Angeles dominates due to its large media, entertainment, and e-commerce presence, while San Francisco and San Jose reflect the Bay Area's concentration of technology and SaaS employers, and San Diego has a growing cluster of biotech, direct-to-consumer, and digital marketing agencies driving steady demand.
Are there remote seo manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 19% of seo manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the role translates to distributed work. The parts of the role most commonly done remotely are keyword research, content planning, performance reporting, and technical audits, while roles requiring close collaboration with engineering or product teams are more likely to request some in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a seo manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as an SEO specialist or content coordinator at a California digital marketing agency, then moving into management after demonstrating measurable results. Large California employers like Expedia Group, Intuit, and major agency networks regularly hire junior SEO talent and promote from within. Building a portfolio with personal projects or freelance work, earning a Google Analytics certification, and gaining proficiency in tools like SEMrush or Ahrefs gives candidates a clear edge when applying to that first coordinator-level role.
Where can I find and apply to seo manager jobs in California?
