Social Work Jobs in Missouri: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a social work in Missouri?
You become a licensed social worker in Missouri by earning a qualifying degree and applying through the Missouri State Committee for Social Workers, which sits under the Division of Professional Registration. A Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) qualifies you for the Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker (LBSW) credential, while an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program is required for the LMSW or LCSW. Each license level requires a passing score on the ASWB exam at the corresponding level.
How much do social works make in Missouri?
Social works in Missouri earn a median of about $59,870 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $39,180 for the lowest 10% to over $79,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire social works in Missouri?
Companies currently hiring social works in Missouri include University of Missouri-Kansas City, Amedisys, and Cornerstones of Care, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Missouri's largest healthcare systems, county-level family services offices, and community mental health centers are consistently among the most active employers in the state.
Which Missouri cities have the most social work jobs?
Kansas City, Raymore, and Trenton have the most social work openings in Missouri. St. Louis and Kansas City anchor the market because of their large hospital networks, county child welfare offices, and community behavioral health organizations, while Springfield draws steady openings from Mercy Hospital and the region's growing outpatient mental health infrastructure.
How can I get hired as a social work in Missouri with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a case aide or social services specialist role with the Missouri Department of Social Services, which regularly brings on candidates with a bachelor's degree who are still working toward full licensure. Children's Mercy Hospital and Compass Health Network in the Kansas City and St. Louis areas run internship and new-graduate pipelines for MSW students. Completing your LBSW exam early and logging supervised hours at a field placement site gives you a concrete credential advantage before your first full-time application.
