Social Worker Jobs in Maryland: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a social worker in Maryland?
Becoming a licensed social worker in Maryland requires applying through the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners, which oversees four license tiers: LGSW, LCSW-C, LCSW, and LISW-C. A Bachelor of Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program qualifies you for entry-level registration, while clinical licensure requires a Master of Social Work plus supervised hours and passage of the ASWB clinical exam. School-based positions also require Maryland Department of Education approval.
Which companies hire social workers in Maryland?
Maryland social worker roles are posted by LifeStance Health, Thriveworks, and Johns Hopkins Health System and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Maryland's dense concentration of hospital systems, state agencies, and federally qualified health centers makes it one of the more active markets for social work hiring on the East Coast.
Which Maryland cities have the most social worker jobs?
Baltimore, Annapolis, and Towson have the most social worker openings in Maryland right now. Baltimore anchors the market through its large hospital networks and state agency headquarters, while Silver Spring and the broader Washington suburbs draw openings from federally connected health organizations, nonprofit behavioral health providers, and Montgomery County's extensive human services infrastructure.
Are there remote social worker jobs in Maryland?
Yes, but they're limited compared to desk-based fields, since much of social work involves in-person client contact, home visits, and court appearances. About 85% of social worker openings tied to Maryland are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting a real but selective segment of the market. Telehealth counseling, care coordination, and utilization review roles are the most consistently remote-friendly specialties.
How can I get hired as a social worker in Maryland with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for case manager or social work associate roles at Maryland's large public agencies and hospital systems, which regularly hire candidates with a Bachelor of Social Work and no independent experience. The Maryland Department of Human Services and Baltimore City Department of Social Services both post entry-level positions in child protective services and benefits programs. Completing a field practicum at a Maryland agency during your degree and obtaining your LGSW registration immediately after graduation gives you a meaningful edge over other new applicants.
Where can I find and apply to social worker jobs in Maryland?
You can find and apply to social worker jobs in Maryland on Migrate Mate, which lists current Maryland openings across healthcare, child welfare, behavioral health, and school settings. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your license level and specialty, and apply directly to the employer.
