SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Director, Software Services, this position requires strong interpersonal skills and a service-oriented mindset, as the position regularly engages with ministry stakeholders, department leaders, and end users to understand their needs, communicate solutions clearly, and build trust across technical and non-technical audiences. This role combines business analysis with hands-on technical investigation, reporting, and data analysis. As a member of the Software Services team, this position contributes to the ongoing maintenance and support of the Synod’s core database systems and the development of applications that serve and support various areas of ministry within WELS. The Technical Solutions Analyst is responsible for analyzing projects, defining detailed user stories, supporting reporting and data insights, and troubleshooting system issues to identify root causes and recommend solutions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES are listed below. Other duties may be assigned.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with ministry stakeholders, department contacts, and end users, serving as a trusted point of contact for system and reporting needs.
- Conduct discovery meetings and structured interviews to elicit business requirements, ensuring stakeholder perspectives are accurately understood and documented.
- Break down initiatives into clear, well-defined user stories with acceptance criteria and technical considerations.
- Analyze workflows and system interactions to recommend practical, scalable solutions.
- Contribute to backlog grooming and prioritization with both business and technical awareness.
- Investigate system issues across applications, integrations, and databases to determine root cause.
- Analyze logs, database records, and system behavior to isolate defects or inconsistencies.
- Partner with developers to validate findings and support resolution of defects.
- Document issues clearly for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Design, build, and maintain reports and dashboards using Power BI.
- Respond to report requests from stakeholders, translating business needs into meaningful data visualizations.
- Work with data sources (SQL, APIs, etc.) to ensure accurate and consistent reporting.
- Identify trends, anomalies, and insights to support decision-making.
- Identify opportunities to improve data quality, reporting processes, and system performance.
- Contribute to documentation of systems, data flows, and reporting standards.

- Strong oral and written communication skills.

- Experience with Microsoft Office Tools: Word, Excel, SharePoint.
- Experience working independently, as well as part of a team.
- Knowledge of Agile development methodologies and the Scrum framework.
- Knowledge of relational databases (SQL).
- Ability to adapt to new technologies.
- Ability to understand business needs, identify growth and innovation opportunities, and propose technical solutions.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong written and verbal communication skills, organization skills, proficiency with computers, and web concepts are highly desirable.
