Sonographer Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a sonographer in Tennessee?
Tennessee does not require a state-issued sonographer license, so employers use national credentials as the hiring standard. Most positions require registration through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists sonography pathway. You'll need to complete an accredited diagnostic medical sonography program, typically an associate or bachelor's degree, before sitting for the credentialing exam. Graduates of CAAHEP-accredited programs in Tennessee are eligible to sit immediately after completing their degree.
How much do sonographers make in Tennessee?
Sonographers in Tennessee earn a median of about $80,640 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,220 for the lowest 10% to over $101,830 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire sonographers in Tennessee?
Employers hiring sonographers in Tennessee right now include TridentCare, Covenant Health, and Cookeville Regional Medical Center, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Tennessee's concentration of large academic medical centers, regional health systems, and independent cardiology and women's health practices means openings appear across the state at a consistent pace year-round.
Which Tennessee cities have the most sonographer jobs?
Nashville, Knoxville, and Memphis have the most sonographer openings in Tennessee. Nashville leads because of its dense cluster of hospital systems and outpatient imaging groups, while Memphis and Knoxville are driven by major academic and regional medical centers that maintain large imaging departments and recruit continuously for multiple modalities.
Are there remote sonographer jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, but they're rare. Sonography is a hands-on clinical role requiring direct patient contact and real-time imaging, so the vast majority of positions are fully on-site. About 0% of sonographer openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those roles typically involve tele-review, quality assurance of stored images, or supervisory functions rather than direct scanning.
How can I get hired as a sonographer in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate positions at large Tennessee health systems that regularly onboard candidates who have completed an accredited program but lack post-graduate experience. Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Covenant Health, and regional systems affiliated with HCA Healthcare in Nashville run structured imaging orientations designed for new credentialed graduates. Candidates coming from radiologic technologist or cardiovascular technician roles often transition into sonography with relative ease. Holding your ARDMS credential before applying, even without clinical years, gives you a clear edge over uncredentialed applicants.
