Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Special Education Teacher for the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center. This position reports to the Assistant Director.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Coordinates educational and behavioral programming for students with developmental disabilities, specifically autism, enrolled at the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center.
- Trains and supervises university undergraduate practicum students.
- Works with families of the students who attend the DDDC.
- Coordinates inter-department activities as related to educational and behavioral assessment, intervention, and transition for a particular group.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree with NJ Teacher K-6 certification (including CE/CEAS).
- A Teacher of the Handicapped Certification or Teacher of Students with Disabilities endorsement/CE/CEAS, as outlined by the New Jersey Department of Education Office of Licensing and Credentials.
- At least 1-2 years’ experience working with individuals with autism, behavioral technology, data management, goal assessment and planning, family programming, and paraprofessional supervision.
Certifications/Licenses
- Must obtain standard teaching credential within 2 years of hire date.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Effective communication skills and computer literacy.
- Teachers who do not meet DOE requirements, but who are eligible under IDEA flexibility rules, will have a maximum of 2 years to complete requirements as outlined by the NJDOE.
- Effective and proficient oral and written communication skills.
- Computer literacy.
- Knowledge of Advanced Behavioral Technology, research, and an understanding of DDDC’s research and mentoring models.
- Knowledge of and experience with computers and computer software.
- Research experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree.

- Computers: Word Processing, databases, spreadsheets, graphing software, commercially made educational materials (i.e., Handwriting Without Tears, Edmark Reading, Reading Mastery, etc.)
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Must be physically active and be on feet most of the day.
- Duties may involve running and playing active games with individuals with autism (ages 3 1/2 – 21 years or adults), driving vans or other vehicles.
- Following training must be physically capable of safely providing crisis management techniques including restraining, lifting, blocking individuals with challenging behavior.
- Crowded and moderately noisy conditions with children, adolescents, adults, and staff moving about.
