Tax Associate Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax associate in New Jersey?
The standard path is a bachelor's degree in accounting, followed by progress toward the CPA credential through the New Jersey State Board of Accountancy, which requires passing the Uniform CPA Examination and completing the required education hours. Many entry-level tax associate roles at public accounting firms and corporate tax departments in New Jersey hire candidates who are CPA-eligible rather than fully licensed, making the exam process something you can pursue while working.
How much do tax associates make in New Jersey?
Tax associates in New Jersey earn a median of about $43,420 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $34,250 for the lowest 10% to over $77,640 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax associates in New Jersey?
Employers hiring tax associates in New Jersey right now include H&R Block, Intuit, and EY, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New Jersey's concentration of pharmaceutical headquarters, financial services firms, and large public accounting offices makes it one of the more active markets in the Northeast for this role.
Which New Jersey cities have the most tax associate jobs?
The cities with the most tax associate openings in New Jersey are Hoboken, Morristown, and Lodi. Newark and Jersey City draw the most listings because of their proximity to New York City financial services firms and the presence of major accounting firm offices, while Parsippany and Iselin attract corporate tax roles tied to the pharmaceutical and consumer goods companies headquartered along the Route 1 and I-287 corridors.
Are there remote tax associate jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles, since tax compliance and research work is largely desk-based and document-driven. About 71% of tax associate openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how well the day-to-day work translates outside the office. The most remote-friendly areas tend to be federal tax research, income tax compliance, and tax provision work, while client-facing or audit-support roles are more likely to require in-office time.
How can I get hired as a tax associate in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a public accounting firm through a staff associate program, where firms like those in Newark and Jersey City regularly hire recent graduates alongside CPA candidates with no prior professional tax experience. Internships that convert to full-time offers are common at mid-size regional firms in the state. Candidates coming from adjacent roles in bookkeeping, accounts payable, or financial analysis can also transition in, and completing at least a few parts of the CPA exam gives a clear credential edge when competing against other candidates without experience.
Where can I find and apply to tax associate jobs in New Jersey?
You can find and apply to tax associate jobs in New Jersey on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across public accounting firms, corporate tax departments, and financial services employers throughout the state. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to the ones that match.
