Tax Senior Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax senior manager in California?
The path to tax senior manager in California starts with earning a CPA license through the California Board of Accountancy, which requires passing the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting California's education and experience requirements. Most candidates begin in staff or senior associate roles at a public accounting firm or a corporate tax department, then advance through manager and senior manager levels as they build technical depth in areas like California state and local tax or federal compliance.
How much do tax senior managers make in California?
Tax senior managers in California earn a median of about $97,050 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,770 for the lowest 10% to over $160,520 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax senior managers in California?
Employers hiring tax senior managers in California right now include BDO, KPMG, and RSM, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's dense concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters and large regional accounting firms means both in-house corporate tax teams and public accounting practices post senior manager openings throughout the year.
Which California cities have the most tax senior manager jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Irvine have the most tax senior manager openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through its entertainment, media, and real estate industries, San Francisco and San Jose reflect the Bay Area's concentration of technology and venture-backed companies with complex tax needs, and other metro areas with large employer campuses or regional accounting firm offices contribute consistent openings outside the major hubs.
Are there remote tax senior manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. Tax senior manager work is largely analytical and documentation-driven, making it well suited to remote and hybrid arrangements. About 59% of tax senior manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the broader shift in professional services. Roles focused on federal and state tax compliance, research, and provision work tend to offer the most location flexibility, while positions requiring close collaboration with local finance teams often remain hybrid.
How can I get hired as a tax senior manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing an associate or staff tax role at a Big Four or large regional firm with a significant California presence, such as the Los Angeles or San Francisco offices of Deloitte, Ernst and Young, or Grant Thornton, which run structured new-associate programs that develop technical skills over several years. Lateral moves from adjacent roles in financial reporting, accounting, or audit can also open the door if paired with CPA exam progress. Completing the California CPA licensure requirements early gives candidates a clear advantage over peers still working toward the credential.
