Therapist Jobs in San Mateo: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a therapist job in San Mateo?
Focus your search on the healthcare systems, community mental health agencies, and private group practices that drive most hiring in San Mateo. Employers in the downtown medical corridor, Bay Meadows area, and along El Camino Real tend to post the most openings. Candidates who hold licensure in California, have experience with outpatient or behavioral health populations, and can demonstrate familiarity with electronic health records stand out in this market.
Which companies hire therapists in San Mateo?
San Mateo therapist roles are posted by County of San Mateo, Sutter Health, and Voyage Health and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. The local employer mix leans toward integrated health systems, county-affiliated behavioral health programs, and specialty outpatient clinics that serve San Mateo County's diverse residential communities.
Are there remote therapist jobs in San Mateo?
Yes, though most therapist roles require in-person client contact, so remote options are more limited here than in purely desk-based fields. About 20% of therapist openings tied to San Mateo are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with telehealth positions most common among roles focused on individual therapy, case management coordination, or clinical consultation work.
How can I get a therapist job in San Mateo with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in San Mateo is through associate or registered intern roles at community mental health centers and county-contracted nonprofits, which regularly supervise pre-licensed clinicians working toward their hours. Employers serving San Mateo County's Medi-Cal population, school-based mental health programs tied to the San Mateo-Foster City School District, and residential treatment facilities often hire candidates who are still accumulating licensure hours, making them strong first stops for early-career therapists.
Which industries hire the most therapists in San Mateo?
San Mateo therapist roles concentrate in Healthcare & Medical Services and Education, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. San Mateo's position as a hub for both major health systems and county behavioral health services means demand stays consistent across clinical, school-based, and community program settings throughout the year.
