INTRODUCTION
Indiana University, Bloomington
Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering
Department of Intelligent Systems Engineering
Postdoctoral Fellow in Quantum Materials and Devices – Deng Research Group
Prof. Bingchen Deng in the Department of Intelligent Systems Engineering at Indiana University Bloomington invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on investigating emerging physical phenomena in low-dimensional quantum materials and leverage them in device applications. The candidates should be familiar with quantum physics and solid-state physics/devices and should have extensive hands-on experimental experience in one of the following fields: condensed matter physics, electrical engineering, or materials science. Prior experience in nanodevice fabrication and electrical/optical measurements is preferred but not required. The position is available immediately.
Our research explores fundamental science of low-dimensional quantum materials and their applications in microelectronic and optoelectronic devices. We study quantum confinement, light-matter interactions, topology, and strongly correlated electrons in a wide range of low-dimensional materials using nanofabricated devices and electrical and optical measurements. These efforts aim to uncover new physical phenomena and translate them into applications in semiconductor industry, quantum technologies, optical sensing, and so on.
We are committed to providing a supportive and collaborative environment for all group members to conduct innovative and independent research. The postdoctoral fellow will receive regular feedback and guidance through group meetings and individual meetings and will develop key technical and professional skills that are valuable for careers in academia or industry.
Appointment Type: Full-time non-tenure track appointment.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph.D. in one of the following or related fields by the time of the appointment: Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering.
- Hands-on experimental experience with solid-state device/materials.

Which education employers in Indiana sponsor TN visas?
Purdue University in West Lafayette and Indiana University in Bloomington are among the most active sponsors, regularly filing TN visa paperwork for research, technology, and academic support roles. Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), Ball State University, and large public school districts in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne also have established international hiring processes and the HR infrastructure to support TN sponsorship.
Which cities in Indiana have the most education TN sponsorship jobs?
Indianapolis has the highest concentration of education TN roles, driven by IUPUI, Butler University, and the Indianapolis Public Schools district. West Lafayette is a strong second due to Purdue University's size and research output. Bloomington follows closely with Indiana University's large academic and administrative workforce. Fort Wayne and Muncie, home to Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne and Ball State respectively, also see consistent hiring in qualifying roles.
What types of education roles typically qualify for TN sponsorship in Indiana?
TN visa eligibility in education is tied to specific USMCA occupation categories. Roles that commonly qualify include computer systems analyst positions in university IT departments, scientific technologists in research labs, economists in institutional research offices, and college-level professors in listed academic disciplines. General classroom teaching at the K-12 level does not fall under a standard TN category, so most qualifying education roles tend to be at the postsecondary or research level.
How do I find education TN sponsorship jobs in Indiana?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter by TN visa type, the education industry, and Indiana as your target state to see currently available roles from employers open to sponsoring TN workers. Because TN eligibility depends on the specific job duties matching an approved USMCA occupation, Migrate Mate's filters help you focus on listings where sponsorship is already part of the hiring conversation, saving significant time compared to searching general job boards.
Are there any Indiana-specific considerations for TN sponsorship in education?
Indiana's large public university system means TN sponsorship in education here is concentrated in a relatively small number of well-resourced institutions familiar with the process. However, TN status does not require a petition filed with USCIS for Canadian citizens, who can apply at the border with an offer letter and supporting credentials. For roles at smaller private colleges or K-12 districts, it is worth confirming early in the hiring process that the specific job duties align with a recognized TN occupation category, as not all education titles qualify.
