Which construction companies sponsor F-1 STEM OPT visas in Maryland?
Maryland's largest construction employers with documented sponsorship activity include Clark Construction Group, Whiting-Turner Contracting, AECOM, and Parsons Corporation. These firms regularly hire civil, structural, and environmental engineers into STEM OPT-eligible roles. Smaller specialty contractors and engineering consultancies in the Baltimore and Montgomery County areas also hire STEM OPT candidates, particularly for project engineering and construction management positions tied to state infrastructure programs.
Which cities in Maryland have the most construction F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs?
Baltimore is the primary market, with active hiring across commercial, infrastructure, and transit construction projects. Rockville and Bethesda in Montgomery County support a dense cluster of engineering firms serving both federal and private clients. Annapolis and Greenbelt also see consistent demand, particularly for civil and environmental roles connected to state agency contracts and the NASA Goddard corridor's adjacent construction and facilities projects.
What types of construction roles typically qualify for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship?
STEM OPT eligibility requires the position to be classified under an approved STEM CIP code and to involve practical application of a STEM degree. In construction, qualifying roles typically include civil engineer, structural engineer, environmental engineer, construction project engineer, and geotechnical engineer. General site superintendent or trades-based roles without a direct STEM degree requirement generally do not qualify. Confirm your specific role and degree alignment with your Designated School Official before applying.
How do I find construction F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship jobs in Maryland?
Migrate Mate filters construction job listings in Maryland by visa type, showing which employers have active F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship history. This is faster than manually reviewing individual company career pages. Focus your search on civil engineering, environmental engineering, and project management roles in Baltimore, Rockville, and the DC metro corridor, where Maryland's largest construction employers concentrate their STEM-eligible hiring.
Are there Maryland-specific considerations for F-1 STEM OPT sponsorship in construction?
Maryland's volume of state and federal infrastructure contracts, including transit, water, and transportation work, means many construction employers are already enrolled in E-Verify, which is a federal requirement for STEM OPT extensions. Employers on state contracts must comply with Maryland's prevailing wage law for public works projects, which can affect compensation structures on those roles. Your STEM OPT employer must also submit a formal training plan to your DSO within ten days of employment starting.
