INTRODUCTION
Boston Dynamics is seeking an ambitious engineer to join our Atlas Platform Mechanical team. As a Mechanical Engineering Intern or Co-op on the Atlas program you will design mechanical parts and assemblies, build and test prototypes, investigate issues, and perform experiments to validate design improvements. In this role, your tasks will range from working on individual components of various kinds to fully integrated robots. Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Day to Day Activities:
- Work within a multidisciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to design and support complex robotic systems
- Plan and perform verification and validation testing on prototype and production systems
- Design and develop new and novel features for existing products
- Troubleshoot issues, perform root cause failure analysis and design/implement corrective actions to sustain existing products
- Design and release parts and assemblies using Catia CAD software
- Develop and maintain product support documentation including bills of material (BOMs) and detailed part/assembly drawings
- Support system design analyses, including reliability, DFM / DFA, cost-reduction
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Current student enrolled in a Bachelor Degree program in Mechanical Engineering or Robotics Engineering
- Demonstrated passion for robotics and mechanical design
- Experience designing components and assemblies using 3D CAD tools (Solidworks, CATIA, etc.) including simulations (FEA/CFD) and generation of detailed 2D drawings
- Hands on ability to independently fabricate, assemble, and troubleshoot components and systems
- High level of technical writing proficiency (specs, test plans, reports, white papers, etc.)
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with Python, LabView, or MATLAB or similar tools
- Experience with a range of manufacturing processes - injection molding, castings, extrusions, sheet metal, weldments, compression molding, etc
- Exposure to ASME drafting standards including GD&T, (Y14.5-2018)
- Experience working with dynamic systems with sensors, actuators and mechanisms
- Demonstrated internship or other experience designing and developing mechanical parts and assemblies for product applications (consumer, industrial, medical)
