Which agriculture companies in Virginia sponsor visas for international workers?
Major agriculture employers in Virginia that sponsor visas include Perdue Farms (poultry processing), Smithfield Foods (pork production), Virginia Tech's agricultural research programs, and large vineyard operations in Loudoun and Albemarle counties. Food processing facilities in Norfolk and Richmond also regularly sponsor H-2A and H-1B visas for seasonal workers and agricultural specialists.
What visa types are most common for agriculture jobs in Virginia?
H-2A visas dominate for seasonal agricultural work, especially during harvest seasons in the Shenandoah Valley and Eastern Shore. H-1B visas are used for agricultural research positions, farm management roles, and food science positions at companies like Cargill. TN visas work well for Canadian and Mexican agricultural engineers working with Virginia's commodity producers.
How to find agriculture visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Start with Migrate Mate to search agriculture positions specifically filtered for Virginia employers who sponsor visas. Focus on regions like the Shenandoah Valley for fruit production, Southside for tobacco and livestock, and the Eastern Shore for vegetable farming. Target university research positions at Virginia Tech and VCU for year-round opportunities beyond seasonal work.
Which Virginia cities have the most agriculture visa sponsorship opportunities?
Winchester and the Shenandoah Valley lead with apple orchards and vineyards sponsoring seasonal workers. Norfolk and Virginia Beach offer food processing roles year-round. Blacksburg benefits from Virginia Tech's agricultural research programs. Smithfield and Suffolk have major meat processing facilities, while Charlottesville area wineries increasingly sponsor specialized viticulture positions.
Are there specific requirements for agriculture visa sponsorship in Virginia?
Virginia follows federal H-2A wage requirements, which vary by region but are generally higher in Northern Virginia counties. The state's DOL certification process requires proof of recruiting U.S. workers first. Virginia Tech partnerships can provide pathways for F-1 students to transition to sponsored positions in agricultural research and extension services.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored agriculture jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
