Which energy companies sponsor visas in Virginia?
Dominion Energy leads Virginia's visa sponsorship activity, regularly filing H-1B petitions for engineering and operations roles. Other active sponsors include Constellation Energy for nuclear operations, Washington Gas for pipeline and distribution positions, and Appalachian Power for transmission projects. Renewable energy developers like Ørsted and Avangrid also sponsor visas for their offshore wind projects based in Virginia Beach and Norfolk.
How to find energy visa sponsorship jobs in Virginia?
Use Migrate Mate to browse current energy openings with confirmed visa sponsorship in Virginia. The platform filters specifically for roles at companies with proven H-1B filing history. Focus your search on Richmond for corporate headquarters positions, Hampton Roads for maritime and offshore wind roles, and Northern Virginia for regulatory and policy positions near federal agencies.
Which visa types are most common for energy roles in Virginia?
H-1B visas dominate Virginia's energy sector, particularly for electrical engineers, environmental specialists, and project managers. L-1 transfers are common at international companies like Ørsted for offshore wind development. O-1 visas occasionally appear for senior renewable energy consultants or nuclear safety experts. TN visas serve Canadian and Mexican engineers at cross-border pipeline companies.
Which Virginia cities have the most energy sponsorship jobs?
Richmond leads with Dominion Energy's headquarters offering the highest concentration of visa sponsorship opportunities. Virginia Beach and Norfolk follow closely due to offshore wind development and naval energy projects. Northern Virginia, particularly Alexandria and Arlington, provides regulatory and policy roles with energy consulting firms. Smaller concentrations exist in Lynchburg and Roanoke for hydroelectric and distribution operations.
What are the prevailing wage considerations for energy jobs in Virginia?
Virginia's energy sector prevailing wages vary significantly by region, with Northern Virginia commanding the highest rates due to D.C. proximity. Nuclear engineering roles typically meet H-1B wage requirements easily, while entry-level environmental positions may require careful wage analysis. The state's lower cost of living compared to neighboring D.C. and Maryland can make Virginia positions attractive despite potentially lower nominal wages.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored energy jobs in Virginia?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
