Search Energy Jobs in CaliforniaEnergy Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
Which energy companies in California sponsor work visas?
Major sponsors include Chevron and Tesla for petroleum and electric vehicle technology, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) for utilities, and renewable energy companies like Sunrun and First Solar. Tech companies with energy divisions like Google and Apple also sponsor for energy storage and efficiency roles. Many positions require engineering degrees and specialized technical expertise.
What visa types are most common for energy jobs in California?
H-1B visas dominate for engineering and technical roles in renewable energy and utilities. O-1 visas are used for senior researchers and executives in clean technology. TN visas serve Canadian and Mexican engineers, while L-1 visas support international energy companies with California operations. E-3 visas work for qualifying Australian professionals.
Which California cities have the most energy sponsorship opportunities?
San Francisco Bay Area leads with Tesla, PG&E, and clean tech startups. Los Angeles offers petroleum refining and renewable development roles with Chevron and smaller firms. Sacramento attracts utility and regulatory positions. Fresno and Bakersfield focus on traditional energy, while San Diego emphasizes research and development at universities and private companies.
How to find energy visa sponsorship jobs in California?
Use Migrate Mate to browse verified sponsorship positions filtered specifically for California energy roles. Focus on companies with established H-1B filing history like major utilities and tech firms. Network through California universities with strong engineering programs, and consider starting with internships at companies known for converting students to full-time sponsored positions.
Are there special considerations for energy sponsorship in California?
California's high prevailing wages in tech hubs can make H-1B sponsorship more expensive for employers. The state's university system, particularly UC Berkeley and Stanford, creates strong pipelines for F-1 to H-1B transitions. Many roles require security clearances that limit visa holder eligibility, so focus on private sector renewable energy and utilities positions.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored energy jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
