Which nonprofit organizations in Washington sponsor H-1B visas?
Several large Washington nonprofits have documented H-1B visa sponsorship histories, including PATH (the global health nonprofit headquartered in Seattle), Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Seattle Children's Research Institute, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and various University of Washington-affiliated research centers. Tribal organizations and regional health systems operating as nonprofits have also filed H-1B petitions, particularly for clinical, research, and technology roles.
Which cities in Washington have the most nonprofit H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Seattle accounts for the largest share of nonprofit H-1B sponsorship activity in Washington, driven by its concentration of global health organizations, research institutes, and large foundation headquarters. Bellevue and the broader Puget Sound area also have meaningful nonprofit employer presence. Spokane has a secondary cluster of nonprofit healthcare and social services organizations, and several federally recognized tribal enterprises in eastern and western Washington have sponsored H-1B workers in specialized roles.
What types of nonprofit roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Washington?
H-1B sponsorship in the nonprofit sector is generally limited to specialty occupation roles requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. In Washington nonprofits, this commonly includes biomedical researchers, epidemiologists, data scientists, software engineers, public health analysts, and program directors with specialized credentials. Generalist roles in administration, community outreach, or fundraising typically do not meet the specialty occupation threshold and are unlikely to qualify for H-1B sponsorship.
How do I find nonprofit H-1B sponsorship jobs in Washington?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers looking for verified H-1B sponsorship roles, including positions in Washington's nonprofit sector. You can filter by state, visa type, and industry to surface nonprofit employers who have sponsored H-1B workers previously. Because nonprofit H-1B roles are less frequently advertised with explicit sponsorship language than tech roles, using a platform like Migrate Mate that aggregates sponsorship history data is particularly useful in this sector.
Are there any Washington-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship at nonprofits?
Washington nonprofits that qualify as universities or related nonprofit research organizations may file H-1B petitions as cap-exempt employers, meaning their petitions are not subject to the annual 85,000 cap or lottery. This applies to institutions like the University of Washington and affiliated research entities. Nonprofits without cap-exempt status must go through the standard H-1B lottery, which runs once per year with a registration window in March. Confirming an organization's cap-exempt status before applying is an important step in evaluating your options.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B nonprofit jobs in Washington?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
