How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Dentist
Apply to CAAPID advanced standing programs early
Advanced standing DDS/DMD programs have limited seats and competitive admissions. Applying through CAAPID during the earliest cycle gives you the best selection of schools and locations. Programs at schools like NYU, USC, and Boston University are well-known for training international dentists and have strong networks for job placement afterward.
Pass the INBDE before starting your U.S. program
The Integrated National Board Dental Examination is required for licensure and is also a prerequisite for many advanced standing programs. Passing it before enrollment demonstrates your readiness and may strengthen your application. The INBDE replaced the separate Part I and Part II NBDE exams in 2020.
Target dental practices in Health Professional Shortage Areas
Dental HPSAs exist in every state, and practices in these areas face significant difficulty recruiting domestically. Employers in shortage areas often have both the motivation and experience to sponsor international dentists. If you trained on a J-1 visa, serving in a dental HPSA can fulfill your Conrad 30 waiver service commitment.
Consider dental specialization for stronger sponsorship positioning
Completing a residency in endodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, or orthodontics makes you significantly harder to replace and commands higher compensation. Specialty residency programs at U.S. universities may offer stipends and visa support during training. Specialists have more leverage when negotiating sponsorship terms with private practices or group dental organizations.
Explore corporate dental organizations for structured sponsorship
Large dental service organizations like Aspen Dental, Heartland Dental, and Pacific Dental Services operate hundreds of locations and have HR departments equipped to handle visa petitions. These organizations often provide signing bonuses, relocation assistance, and immigration support as part of their recruitment packages. Their scale means they regularly navigate the sponsorship process for new dentists.

Can foreign-trained dentists practice in the U.S. with visa sponsorship?
Yes, but the path requires additional education and licensing. Foreign-trained dentists typically must complete an advanced standing program at a CODA-accredited U.S. dental school, which usually takes two to three years. After completing the program and passing the INBDE (Integrated National Board Dental Examination) and a regional or state clinical exam, you are eligible for state licensure and H-1B sponsorship as a specialty occupation.
What is CAAPID, and how does it work for international dentists?
CAAPID (Centralized Application for Advanced Placement for International Dentists) is the application system for advanced standing DDS/DMD programs at U.S. dental schools. These programs allow foreign-trained dentists to earn a U.S. dental degree in a compressed timeframe, typically two to three years instead of four. Admission is competitive, and most programs require TOEFL scores, the INBDE or its predecessor exams, and evidence of your foreign dental degree.
Do community health centers sponsor visas for dentists?
Yes. Federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) and community health centers face severe dental provider shortages, especially in rural and underserved areas. Many of these centers have experience sponsoring H-1B visas and supporting green card petitions for dentists. Some dentists who trained on J-1 visas use the Conrad 30 waiver program to fulfill a service commitment at a community health center while transitioning to permanent residency.
Can dentists qualify for J-1 waiver programs?
Dentists who completed residency training in the U.S. on a J-1 visa may be eligible for a waiver of the two-year home residency requirement. The Conrad 30 program and federal agency waivers (through HHS or other agencies) are available to dentists who agree to practice in a designated underserved area for at least three years. Dental HPSAs exist in many states, creating opportunities to fulfill the waiver requirement.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Dentist jobs?
When a U.S. employer sponsors a foreign worker for a work visa, they are legally required to pay at least the "prevailing wage" — the average wage paid to workers in the same occupation, in the same geographic area, with similar experience. This is set by the Department of Labor to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at below-market rates. The prevailing wage varies significantly by role, location, and experience level — for example, a dentist in California will have a different prevailing wage than the same role in a smaller state. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search.
