Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Revenue Cycle provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all revenue cycle functions across University of Iowa Health Care. This role effectively manages patient access, billing, coding, claims processing, collections, and revenue integrity, aligning with institutional goals and regulatory requirements.
The AVP of Revenue Cycle is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing the end-to-end revenue cycle operations, focusing on optimizing financial performance, ensuring regulatory compliance, and enhancing the patient financial experience. This position requires exceptional leadership, operational expertise, and advanced communication skills to effectively manage complex and sensitive financial matters. The AVP serves as a key liaison among patients, physicians, hospital executives, and third-party payers, fostering collaborative relationships and maintaining high standard of public relations and service excellence.
Leadership and People Development
Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and high performance across multi-site teams.
Facilitate team building and collaboration across departments to break down silos and improve cross-functional performance.
Use data-driven insights to guide leadership decisions, evaluate team effectiveness, and identify areas for improvement.
Strategic Leadership
Provide strategic leadership and direction to all Revenue Cycle departments, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and financial performance targets.
Drive system-wide collaboration to integrate financial strategies with clinical, operational, and technological initiatives.
Drive organizational strategy through actionable revenue cycle initiatives with measurable outcomes.
Operational Oversight
Provide executive oversight for all revenue cycle operations, including patient access, billing, coding, charge capture, denials management, and collections.
Ensure consistent application of standardized processes, policies, and procedures across the health system to promote operational excellence.
Use benchmarking and comparative analytics to identify opportunities for operational improvements and best practice adoption.
Performance Management
Establish and maintain a robust performance management framework for all revenue cycle functions, with clear KPIs and performance expectations.
Use data-driven analysis to identify performance trends, variances, and root causes of underperformance.
Analyze payer performance and denial trends to optimize reimbursement and inform contract negotiation strategies.
Technology & Innovation
Lead the strategic integration of technology solutions that enhance efficiency, transparency, and accuracy across the entire revenue cycle.
Lead system optimization efforts following EHR or revenue cycle platform upgrades, acquisitions, or integrations.
Champion the adoption of automation, AI, and machine learning tools to streamline workflows, reduce manual processes, and improve cash performance.
Compliance & Risk Management
Oversee internal controls, audit readiness, and risk mitigation strategies across all revenue cycle functions.
Monitor and interpret evolving healthcare regulations, reimbursement models, and payer requirements to ensure timely organizational adaptation.
Develop and implement a comprehensive compliance framework for billing, coding, charge capture, and reimbursement practices.
Collaboration
Serve as a trusted advisor and collaborator to senior leaders on financial performance, operational strategies, and process improvement initiatives.
Lead interdepartmental initiatives that align revenue cycle goals with broader organizational strategies, such as quality, safety, and patient satisfaction.
Ensure effective communication channels are established to disseminate information, share best practices, and reinforce alignment across all sites.
Education Requirements
Master’s Degree in Hospital Administration, Public Administration or Business Administration or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Experience Requirements
Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
10+ years of experience relating to the revenue cycle process.
5+ years of experience with CDM and hospital reimbursement.
Comprehensive knowledge of complex health care systems including state and federal policies.
Advanced understanding of CPT, HCPS, ICD-10, and third-party billing requirements.
Experience with CMS rules and regulations, and coding and billing compliance.
Previous experience with third party billing/collections, patient billing, and collections.
Previous experience with billing and coding of both clinical and physician services
Previous experience with pre-access functions such as insurance eligibility and verification, pre-certification, referral/authorization.
