Waiter Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a waiter in Texas?
To work as a waiter in Texas, you must complete a state-approved food handler training course and obtain your Texas Food Handler certification, which is required by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Most employers also expect a high school diploma or equivalent. Beyond certification, gaining experience in entry-level front-of-house roles such as host, busser, or food runner is the most common path into a server position in Texas.
How much do waiters make in Texas?
Waiters in Texas earn a median of about $23,240 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $17,070 for the lowest 10% to over $47,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire waiters in Texas?
Employers hiring waiters in Texas right now include Garver, HDR, and Freese and Nichols, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large urban restaurant markets and tourism-driven cities mean major hospitality groups and independent fine-dining establishments alike maintain consistent year-round hiring across the state.
Which Texas cities have the most waiter jobs?
Austin, Dallas, and Houston have the most waiter job openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas drive the highest volume thanks to their large and diverse restaurant scenes, major convention activity, and dense populations, while San Antonio's robust tourism industry and River Walk hospitality corridor sustain steady demand for experienced servers.
Are there remote waiter jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 17% of waiter openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the fundamentally in-person nature of table service work. The small share of remote-adjacent roles tends to be in virtual hospitality training, restaurant consulting, or catering coordination rather than traditional floor service.
How can I get hired as a waiter in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a busser, food runner, or host at a full-service Texas restaurant and moving into a server role once you know the floor and the menu. Large Texas hospitality groups like Landry's and Darden Restaurants regularly hire for these stepping-stone positions, which are designed to develop new staff into servers. Completing your Texas Food Handler certification before applying demonstrates readiness and gives you an edge over candidates who still need to complete it.
Where can I find and apply to waiter jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to waiter jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
