Architect Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a architect in Pennsylvania?
To become a licensed architect in Pennsylvania, you must earn a professional degree in architecture from a program accredited by NAAB, complete the required hours of the Architectural Experience Program, and pass all sections of the Architect Registration Examination. Pennsylvania licensure is issued by the State Architects Licensure Board within the Department of State, which also accepts reciprocal licensure from other states for qualified candidates already licensed elsewhere.
How much do architects make in Pennsylvania?
Architects in Pennsylvania earn a median of about $97,030 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,690 for the lowest 10% to over $149,950 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire architects in Pennsylvania?
Employers hiring architects in Pennsylvania right now include Wabtec, Cencora, and Ascensus, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Pennsylvania's mix of large academic medical centers, public universities, and active municipal development programs means hiring is spread across institutional, civic, and private commercial firms statewide.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most architect jobs?
Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Pennsylvania have the most architect openings in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia dominates due to its concentration of major healthcare systems, universities, and ongoing mixed-use development, while Pittsburgh's strength in higher education, tech-adjacent campus projects, and infrastructure work keeps demand steady, and smaller markets like Harrisburg reflect state government and civic construction activity.
Are there remote architect jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, but they're rare. About 76% of architect openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, which reflects how much of architectural work is inherently tied to site visits, client meetings, and hands-on coordination with construction teams. The parts of the role most likely to be done remotely are design development, BIM modeling, and specification writing.
How can I get hired as a architect in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing an architectural intern or junior designer role while completing your Architectural Experience Program hours toward licensure. Large Pennsylvania-based firms and institutional employers such as university facilities departments and hospital systems often bring on recent graduates for production and documentation roles. Building a portfolio that includes academic projects, internship work, or volunteer design experience, paired with Revit proficiency, gives candidates a clear edge over those relying on credentials alone.
Where can I find and apply to architect jobs in Pennsylvania?
You can find and apply to architect jobs in Pennsylvania on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and specialty, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
