Assistant Or Associate Professor Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a assistant or associate professor in Iowa?
Becoming an assistant or associate professor in Iowa requires earning a terminal degree in your field, typically a Ph.D. or M.F.A., from an accredited institution. Iowa does not issue a state teaching license for college-level faculty, so hiring decisions rest with each institution. Candidates build a competitive application through peer-reviewed research, teaching experience, and strong letters of recommendation, then apply directly to Iowa's universities and colleges during their annual faculty hiring cycles.
Which companies hire assistant or associate professors in Iowa?
Employers hiring assistant or associate professors in Iowa right now include Iowa State University and The University of Iowa, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Iowa's large public research universities and private liberal arts colleges drive the majority of faculty openings, with hiring activity concentrated around academic calendar timelines each fall and spring.
Which Iowa cities have the most assistant or associate professor jobs?
Ames and Iowa City account for the most assistant or associate professor openings in Iowa. Iowa City leads because it is home to the University of Iowa and its health sciences complex, Ames follows as the seat of Iowa State University's research enterprise, and Des Moines draws openings from Drake University and a growing cluster of professional and community college programs serving the state capital.
Are there remote assistant or associate professor jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're less common than in many other fields, since most faculty roles involve in-person teaching, lab supervision, or student advising. About 0% of assistant or associate professor openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with online-delivered programs accounting for most of those opportunities. Fully remote positions are most prevalent in business, education, and certain graduate-level or continuing education programs.
How can I get hired as a assistant or associate professor in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a postdoctoral fellowship or visiting assistant professor appointment, which Iowa institutions like the University of Iowa and Iowa State University post regularly to give early-career scholars classroom and research experience. Candidates can also move laterally from lecturer, instructor, or adjunct roles at Iowa's community colleges, such as Kirkwood Community College or Des Moines Area Community College, into tenure-track positions as they build their publication record. A strong teaching portfolio and at least one peer-reviewed publication give candidates a measurable edge in Iowa searches.
Where can I find and apply to assistant or associate professor jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to assistant or associate professor jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current Iowa faculty openings across disciplines and institution types. Search the listings, identify the roles that match your field and rank, and apply directly through each posting. No profile creation is needed to search or review the openings.
