Attorney General Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a attorney general in Texas?
To work as an attorney general in Texas, you must be licensed to practice law in the state through the State Bar of Texas, which requires passing the Texas Bar Examination after earning a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school. Most positions at the Texas Office of the Attorney General or county-level offices also expect prior courtroom or litigation experience, and some divisions require familiarity with specific areas like Medicaid fraud, child support enforcement, or environmental regulation.
Which companies hire attorney generals in Texas?
Employers hiring attorney generals in Texas right now include Kahana & Feld LLP, County of El Paso, TX, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Beyond those, the Texas Office of the Attorney General in Austin is consistently one of the largest single sources of openings, alongside large county governments and major public university systems with in-house counsel divisions.
Which Texas cities have the most attorney general jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and El Paso hold the most attorney general openings in Texas. Austin leads because it is home to the Texas Office of the Attorney General and the state capitol complex, while Houston and Dallas generate volume through large county district attorney offices, regulatory agencies, and the legal divisions of major corporate headquarters and public institutions headquartered in those metros.
Are there remote attorney general jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 69% of attorney general openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting that most of this work involves court appearances, in-person depositions, and agency proceedings that require physical presence. Advisory, policy, and appellate roles are the most likely to offer hybrid arrangements within Texas government and large institutional legal offices.
How can I get hired as a attorney general in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is the Texas Office of the Attorney General's structured fellowship and law clerk programs, which are specifically designed for recent law school graduates awaiting bar results or newly licensed attorneys. Large county offices in Harris, Dallas, and Travis counties also hire assistant attorneys general at the entry level for high-volume divisions like child support, consumer protection, and Medicaid fraud. Passing the Texas Bar and completing a clinic or externship in a public law setting during law school gives candidates a measurable edge in the state hiring process.
