Backend Software Developer Jobs in Missouri: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a backend software developer in Missouri?
Backend software development in Missouri requires no state-issued license or registration, so the path centers on technical education and demonstrated skill. Most Missouri employers expect at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, though strong candidates from accredited bootcamps are considered at many companies. Building a portfolio of projects using Java, Python, or cloud technologies and contributing to open-source work are the most concrete ways to signal readiness to Missouri hiring teams.
How much do backend software developers make in Missouri?
Backend software developers in Missouri earn a median of about $126,120 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,570 for the lowest 10% to over $169,340 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire backend software developers in Missouri?
Employers hiring backend software developers in Missouri right now include Esri, Boeing, and Leidos, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Missouri's financial services and healthcare IT sectors, particularly around Kansas City and St. Louis, consistently produce the highest volume of backend openings among established companies.
Which Missouri cities have the most backend software developer jobs?
St. Louis, St Louis, and Berkeley lead Missouri for backend software developer openings. Kansas City drives volume through its dense concentration of financial technology firms, insurance companies, and healthcare IT employers, while St. Louis adds enterprise software and logistics technology roles anchored by large regional headquarters, and Columbia benefits from a university-connected tech ecosystem that feeds steady junior and mid-level demand.
Are there remote backend software developer jobs in Missouri?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 50% of backend software developer openings tied to Missouri are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the desk-based and infrastructure-focused nature of the work. Roles in API development, microservices, and cloud backend engineering are the most consistently offered on a fully remote basis by Missouri employers.
How can I get hired as a backend software developer in Missouri with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is targeting associate or junior developer roles at Missouri's larger technology employers, where structured onboarding programs exist for candidates without professional experience. Oracle Health in Kansas City and World Wide Technology in St. Louis both run early-career programs for new graduates. Candidates who complete a relevant degree or bootcamp, build two to three deployed projects demonstrating REST APIs or database work, and target rotational or associate engineer titles move into paid positions faster than those applying for mid-level roles without experience.
Where can I find and apply to backend software developer jobs in Missouri?
