Chemistry Professor Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a chemistry professor in New York?
A terminal doctoral degree in chemistry or a closely related discipline is the standard entry requirement for faculty positions at New York colleges and universities. New York does not require chemistry professors to hold a state-issued teaching license for postsecondary instruction, so the path runs through earning a Ph.D., completing postdoctoral research where research-intensive institutions require it, and building a publication record before applying to open faculty lines.
Which companies hire chemistry professors in New York?
New York chemistry professor roles are posted by Syracuse University, Mercy University, and Adelphi University and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of November 2026. New York's density of research universities, liberal arts colleges, and SUNY and CUNY system campuses means faculty openings appear across a wider range of institution types than most other states.
Which New York cities have the most chemistry professor jobs?
New York, Syracuse, and Dryden consistently post the most chemistry professor openings in New York. New York City leads because of the concentration of Columbia, NYU, Fordham, and the CUNY system, while Buffalo benefits from the University at Buffalo and Canisius University, and Albany draws postings from the University at Albany and nearby liberal arts colleges in the Capital Region.
Are there remote chemistry professor jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of chemistry professor openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of November 2026, reflecting the hands-on laboratory instruction and in-person student advising that define most faculty roles. The portions of the work most likely to shift online are lecture-based general education courses and some graduate seminars, particularly at institutions that have expanded distance-learning programs since expanding online offerings.
How can I get hired as a chemistry professor in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an adjunct or visiting lecturer position, which CUNY and SUNY system campuses regularly fill with candidates who hold a master's degree or are completing a doctorate. Postdoctoral fellowships at Columbia, Cornell, or Rockefeller University build the publication record that converts into a tenure-track candidacy. Laboratory coordinator and research scientist roles at New York universities also offer a lateral move into the faculty pipeline for candidates with strong technical credentials.
Where can I find and apply to chemistry professor jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to chemistry professor jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings updated regularly. Search the listings to identify roles that match your research focus, teaching interests, and institution type, then apply directly to the positions that fit.
