Coder Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a coder in California?
To become a medical coder in California, you typically complete a coding-focused certificate or associate degree program at a California community college, then earn a national credential such as the CPC from AAPC or the CCS from AHIMA. California does not issue a separate state license for medical coders, but most employers require one of those national credentials before hiring. Programs at institutions like Santa Monica College and Sacramento City College prepare candidates for these exams.
Which companies hire coders in California?
California coder roles are posted by Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, and NorthBay Health and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's large integrated health systems and physician management groups generate consistent volume, making it one of the most active states for ongoing coder recruitment.
Which California cities have the most coder jobs?
Berkeley, Fairfield, and San Diego consistently have the highest concentration of coder openings in California. Los Angeles and the surrounding region anchor the list because of its dense concentration of hospital networks, large physician groups, and health plan headquarters, while Sacramento draws significant volume from state government health programs and the UC Davis Health system.
Are there remote coder jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most healthcare fields. About 54% of coder openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the desk-based, computer-driven nature of the work. Inpatient facility coding and HCC risk adjustment roles are the most consistently remote, since they rely on electronic health records rather than physical chart rooms.
How can I get hired as a coder in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is to earn a CPC-A designation from AAPC while completing a practicum or externship, which many California community college programs include. Large California employers such as Kaiser Permanente and Dignity Health run new-grad coding apprenticeships and structured onboarding programs for candidates who hold the credential but lack work history. Roles like medical billing specialist or health information technician at California clinics also serve as stepping stones, and a clean coding audit sample or capstone project can substitute for professional experience when applying.
Where can I find and apply to coder jobs in California?
You can find and apply to coder jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring in the state right now. Search the listings to find roles that match your credentials and experience level, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
