Target roles requiring specialized academic credentials
Barnard sponsors E-3 visas for positions where a specific bachelor's degree or higher is a genuine requirement, not a preference. Focus your applications on faculty, research, and student affairs roles where your field of study directly matches the job description.
Verify your occupation qualifies under specialty occupation rules
Not every campus role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Cross-reference your target job title with O*NET to confirm it requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific discipline before investing time in your application at Barnard.
Request an LCA before your start date is finalized
Barnard's HR team must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL before you can attend your visa interview. Factor in DOL's certification timeline when negotiating your start date so your LCA is certified well in advance of your consulate appointment.
Use Migrate Mate to track Barnard's E-3 filing history
Before your interview, search Barnard College on Migrate Mate to review their E-3 Labor Condition Application filings by role and department. This shows you which positions have historically received sponsorship and helps you tailor your application accordingly.
Confirm the offered wage meets DOL prevailing wage levels
Barnard must pay you the prevailing wage for your role and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level for your job title in New York City before your offer is finalized, so there are no surprises during LCA certification.
Prepare for nonimmigrant intent questions specific to academia
Consular officers often probe whether academic roles signal long-term U.S. settlement plans. Have a clear, honest account of your intended stay duration and your ties to Australia ready, especially if your Barnard role is a multi-year research or faculty appointment.
Barnard College E-3 Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Barnard College sponsor E-3 visas?
Yes, Barnard College sponsors E-3 visas for eligible Australian professionals in qualifying roles. Sponsorship is most common for academic, research, and professional administrative positions that require a specific bachelor's degree or higher. You'll need a confirmed job offer before Barnard can begin the Labor Condition Application process with DOL.
Which departments at Barnard College typically offer E-3 sponsorship?
E-3 sponsorship at Barnard tends to be concentrated in academic departments, research centers, and student life or administrative offices where roles require specialized degrees. Faculty, postdoctoral, and professional staff positions are the most common pathways. Roles requiring only general experience without a specific degree requirement are unlikely to qualify as specialty occupations.
How do I start the E-3 application process at Barnard College?
Once you have a written job offer, Barnard's HR or international hiring team files a Labor Condition Application with DOL. After DOL certifies the LCA, you take it to your U.S. consulate interview in Australia along with your offer letter and supporting credentials. USCIS is not involved in the initial E-3 consular application process.
How long does the E-3 sponsorship process take at Barnard College?
DOL typically certifies an LCA within seven business days, which is the fastest step. From there, your consulate appointment wait time in Australia drives the overall timeline. Sydney and Melbourne appointments can vary significantly by season. Build at least four to six weeks of lead time into your negotiated start date to account for the full process.
How do I find open E-3 roles at Barnard College?
Search Barnard College's careers page for open positions and filter for roles that match your degree and field. Migrate Mate lists employers with verified E-3 Labor Condition Application filing history, so you can confirm Barnard's sponsorship track record before applying. Prioritize applying to roles where your specific academic background directly matches the stated requirements.
What is the prevailing wage for E-3 sponsorship at Barnard College?
E-3 employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, determined when they file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, ensuring Australian hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
