Match your degree to Duke's role
Duke's HR team and international office evaluate whether your Australian degree field directly aligns with the advertised position. Use O*NET to confirm your occupation's typical education requirement before applying, so the specialty occupation standard is clearly met.
Target Duke's research and clinical departments
E-3 filings at Duke tend to cluster in research, healthcare, and academic support functions. Prioritise roles posted through Duke Health and the Office of Research where international hiring is more routine and hiring managers are familiar with work authorisation processes.
Ask about LCA timing before accepting an offer
Duke's employer of record process requires a certified Labor Condition Application before your consulate appointment. Confirm with the hiring team that the LCA can be filed and certified by DOL within your preferred start timeline, since delays here shift your interview date.
Verify prevailing wage against your offered salary
Before your interview, cross-check your offered salary against the OFLC Wage Search for the relevant SOC code in Durham, North Carolina. If the offer falls below the Level I or II threshold, flag it with Duke's HR contact before the LCA is submitted.
Use Migrate Mate to check Duke's sponsorship history
Search Duke University on Migrate Mate to review which job titles and departments have supported E-3 filings, so you can target your applications to teams with a documented track record of sponsoring Australian professionals.
Prepare your credential evaluation before final interviews
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees for E-3 purposes, but Duke's hiring process may require a formal credential evaluation from a NACES-recognised body. Having this ready avoids delays after an offer is extended.
Duke University E-3 Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Duke University sponsor E-3 visas?
Yes, Duke University sponsors E-3 visas for Australian citizens in qualifying specialty occupation roles. Sponsorship is most common in research, clinical, and academic positions across Duke's schools and medical centre. Not every role is eligible, so confirm sponsorship availability with the hiring team or Duke's international HR contacts early in the process.
Which roles and departments at Duke typically receive E-3 sponsorship?
E-3 sponsorship at Duke is most often associated with research coordinator, clinical research, postdoctoral, and academic professional roles. Duke Health and research-intensive departments within the university tend to have the most experience processing work authorisation for international candidates, making them the most practical targets for E-3 applicants.
How do I apply for an E-3 visa through Duke University?
Once Duke extends a job offer, its HR and international services team files a Labor Condition Application with DOL. After LCA certification, you take that document to your nearest U.S. consulate in Australia along with your DS-160, offer letter, and degree credentials. USCIS is not involved in consular E-3 applications, which keeps the process faster than employer-filed petitions.
How long does E-3 sponsorship processing take at Duke University?
The LCA stage typically certifies within seven business days once DOL receives the filing. Your consulate appointment wait time then depends on availability at Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth. Build at least three to four weeks between your offer acceptance and target start date to accommodate both steps without pressure on Duke's HR team.
How do I find open E-3 jobs at Duke University?
Search Duke's careers portal for roles that match your degree field and specialty occupation. You can also use Migrate Mate to identify which job titles and departments at Duke have a history of E-3 filings, helping you focus your applications on teams where sponsorship approval is a realistic outcome rather than an open question.
What is the prevailing wage for E-3 sponsorship at Duke University?
E-3 employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, determined when they file a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, ensuring Australian hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
