Get ASE Certifications Before Applying
ASE certifications are the industry benchmark Group 1 evaluates technicians against. Holding relevant credentials in areas like engine repair, brakes, or electrical systems signals job-readiness and reduces the employer's hesitation around sponsoring an international candidate.
Target High-Volume Group 1 Markets
Group 1 operates dealerships concentrated in Texas, Oklahoma, and the Northeast. Applying to locations in those regions increases your odds since higher-volume stores carry more open technician roles and have more staffing flexibility to pursue sponsorship.
Search Open Technician Roles Through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Automotive Technician openings at Group 1 Automotive by visa type. It surfaces sponsorship-verified listings so you're not wasting applications on roles where sponsorship was never on the table.
Clarify Sponsorship Willingness in the Initial Interview
Ask the service manager or HR contact directly whether the location handles sponsorship through corporate or the individual dealership. Group 1's decentralized structure means sponsorship decisions can vary by store, so confirm early rather than late in the process.
Understand the TN Visa Path If You're Canadian or Mexican
Automotive technician roles can qualify under the TN visa category for Canadian and Mexican nationals if the position meets DOL's specialty occupation criteria. TN status can be obtained at the port of entry, bypassing USCIS processing timelines entirely.
Confirm E-Verify Enrollment Before Accepting an Offer
Group 1 Automotive participates in E-Verify, which is required for any employer sponsoring work visas. Before signing an offer letter, verify the specific dealership location is enrolled, since multi-location employers occasionally have gaps in enrollment at individual sites.

Does Group 1 Automotive sponsor H-1B visas for Automotive Technicians?
Group 1 Automotive has sponsored H-1B visas for Automotive Technician roles, though sponsorship decisions are not uniform across all dealership locations. Because Group 1 operates a large, decentralized network, it's best to confirm sponsorship availability directly with the specific location or with the corporate HR team during the hiring process.
How do I apply for Automotive Technician jobs at Group 1 Automotive?
You can browse and apply for Automotive Technician openings at Group 1 Automotive through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type so you can focus on positions where sponsorship is confirmed. Group 1 also posts openings on its own careers portal. Applying directly to locations where you've verified sponsorship availability saves significant time.
Which visa types are commonly used for Automotive Technician roles at Group 1 Automotive?
H-1B is the most common employer-sponsored visa for Automotive Technician roles, though F-1 OPT and CPT can be used by students or recent graduates early in their career. Canadian and Mexican nationals may pursue the TN visa, which can be a faster path. J-1 is also used in some training or exchange contexts within the automotive industry.
What qualifications does Group 1 Automotive expect from Automotive Technician candidates seeking visa sponsorship?
Group 1 typically looks for candidates with ASE certifications, hands-on experience with brand-specific vehicles across their franchised brands, and a background in diagnostics and repair. For H-1B sponsorship, the role must qualify as a specialty occupation, which generally requires at least a bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and extensive technical experience in automotive systems.
How do I navigate the timeline between receiving a job offer and starting work as a sponsored Automotive Technician?
Timeline depends on which visa path your employer pursues. H-1B has a cap and lottery cycle with a start date of October 1, so offers made in the spring may not result in a work start date until the following fall unless premium processing is used. TN and OPT extensions move significantly faster. Clarify the expected timeline with HR before resigning any current position.
