Tips for Finding Teaching Jobs at Hofstra University
Tailor your credentials for U.S. academic standards
Hofstra's Teaching roles typically require credentials evaluated against U.S. degree equivalencies. Have your international transcripts assessed by a NACES-approved evaluator before applying, since hiring committees rely on these assessments during initial screening.
Target departments with recurring instructional needs
Hofstra's health sciences, business, and education programs consistently post Teaching openings. Identifying which college or department aligns with your specialization narrows your search and puts you in front of hiring managers most likely to initiate sponsorship.
Understand how TN status applies to Teaching
If you're a Canadian or Mexican citizen, the TN visa covers college and university teachers directly. Hofstra can support TN status without USCIS petition approval, which significantly shortens your timeline to starting a teaching appointment.
Ask about PERM timing before accepting an offer
For permanent residency through EB-2 or EB-3, Hofstra must complete a PERM labor certification with DOL before filing your immigrant petition. Confirm at the offer stage whether the department has budget and institutional will to begin that process.
Use Migrate Mate to surface Hofstra Teaching openings
Hofstra posts Teaching roles across multiple channels at varying times of year. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Hofstra University roles that include visa sponsorship, so you're not manually tracking postings across separate job boards.
Prepare your H-1B timeline around the academic calendar
Hofstra typically structures faculty contracts around the academic year. If your H-1B requires a new petition rather than a transfer, coordinate with Hofstra's HR team early enough to file before USCIS's April 1 cap-subject filing window and secure an October 1 start date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Hofstra University sponsor H-1B visas for Teaching roles?
Yes, Hofstra University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Teaching positions. Roles must meet USCIS specialty occupation criteria, which teaching positions at accredited universities generally satisfy. Sponsorship is initiated by the department after an offer is extended, so confirming the department's intent during the interview process is the right time to raise it.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at Hofstra University?
Applications for Teaching roles at Hofstra are submitted through their HR portal. Most faculty and instructional postings require a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and teaching statement. For roles in specialized programs, a research portfolio or sample syllabi may also be requested. Browsing current openings through Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for Hofstra Teaching roles that include visa sponsorship.
Which visa types does Hofstra University commonly use for Teaching positions?
Hofstra sponsors H-1B visas for ongoing Teaching roles and supports F-1 OPT and CPT for students transitioning into instructional appointments. TN visa status is available to Canadian and Mexican citizens in qualifying teacher categories. For candidates seeking permanent residence, Hofstra has pursued EB-2 and EB-3 pathways through PERM labor certification for eligible faculty.
What qualifications does Hofstra University expect for Teaching roles?
Expectations depend on the level and department. Tenure-track and full-time lecturer positions typically require a terminal degree in the relevant field, such as a Ph.D. or MFA. Adjunct and clinical teaching roles may accept a master's degree combined with professional experience. For international candidates, credential evaluations confirming U.S. degree equivalency are generally required before an offer is finalized.
How do I time my H-1B sponsorship process when starting a Teaching role at Hofstra?
If Hofstra is filing a new cap-subject H-1B petition on your behalf, USCIS requires submission in early April for an October 1 start date. That means your offer should be finalized by late February or March at the latest. If you're already in H-1B status with another employer, Hofstra can file a transfer petition outside the cap, which allows you to start sooner.
