Align your credentials to USCIS specialty occupation standards
Your civil engineering degree must directly support the specific project role, not just engineering broadly. If your degree is from a three-year international program, gather equivalency documentation early, as USCIS scrutinizes degree-to-job-duty alignment closely for H-1B petitions.
Target roles tied to active federal contracts
Michael Baker International frequently staffs civil engineers on DOT and federal infrastructure projects. Roles attached to funded contracts move faster through internal approval, which matters when your OPT or grace period has a hard expiration date.
Search open positions through Migrate Mate
Filter Civil Project Engineer openings at Michael Baker International by visa type on Migrate Mate so you're only reviewing roles where sponsorship has been confirmed, not guessing from generic job postings that omit immigration details.
Ask recruiters about LCA timing before accepting offers
The Labor Condition Application must be certified by DOL before your H-1B petition is filed. Confirm with the recruiter when the LCA process typically starts relative to your offer date, so you're not caught in a gap if your current authorization is expiring.
Flag your OPT STEM extension eligibility upfront
Michael Baker International is a large federal contractor and participates in E-Verify, which is required to authorize STEM OPT extensions. Confirming this early means you can plan for a 24-month extension alongside the H-1B lottery cycle without losing work authorization.
Understand where Green Card sponsorship fits the career path
Consulting firms sponsoring PERM-based Green Cards typically do so after demonstrating an inability to fill the role domestically. For Civil Project Engineers, this often means two or more years in the role, so factor PERM timelines into your longer-term immigration planning from day one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Michael Baker International sponsor H-1B visas for Civil Project Engineers?
Yes, Michael Baker International sponsors H-1B visas for Civil Project Engineers. The company has a consistent track record of filing H-1B petitions for engineering roles, particularly on infrastructure and transportation projects. If you're targeting this path, confirm sponsorship availability with your recruiter before the H-1B cap registration window opens each March.
Which visa types are commonly used for Civil Project Engineer roles at Michael Baker International?
H-1B is the primary route for Civil Project Engineers at Michael Baker International. F-1 OPT and CPT are used for candidates still in school or within their post-graduation authorization window. TN visas are an option for Canadian and Mexican citizens with qualifying engineering degrees. For longer-term employees, EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM is also available.
What qualifications and experience are expected for Civil Project Engineer roles at Michael Baker International?
Most Civil Project Engineer openings require a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related discipline. Practical experience in transportation, structural, or water resources engineering is commonly expected, and an EIT or PE licensure is frequently preferred or required depending on the project level. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD Civil 3D or MicroStation strengthens your application significantly.
How do I apply for Civil Project Engineer jobs at Michael Baker International?
You can browse and apply for Civil Project Engineer openings at Michael Baker International directly through their careers portal or through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm immigration support before applying. When applying, tailor your resume to the specific project domain listed in the posting, whether that's highway design, drainage, or structural work.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship for a Civil Project Engineer role?
H-1B cap registrations open each March for an October 1 start date, so work backward from that window. If you're on OPT, confirm your expiration date and whether a STEM extension applies. Engage with Michael Baker International recruiters in the fall or winter ahead of your target start so the LCA and petition preparation aren't rushed against your authorization deadline.
