WHAT YOU'LL DO:
The Design Engineer - Substation will perform substation design assignments including physical layout and protection & control systems while ensuring compliance with safety and construction standards. This role involves designing substation components, selecting materials, preparing design documents, and collaborating with engineers and field personnel to ensure project accuracy and efficiency. This position will report to a Supervising Engineer and be part of a substation design team with other engineers, designers, and drafters supporting substation projects across the QISG platform. There are four bands to this title; an employee moves up in band as they gain experience and demonstrate mastery of new skills.
- Design physical substation components, including yard layouts, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, raceways, and auxiliary AC/DC power systems.
- Develop protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, cable lists and panel layouts.
- Develop design drawings, calculations, and bills of material from engineering documents for planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
- Conduct engineering calculations, including voltage drop, cable pulling, flicker analysis, and grounding analysis.
- Ensure project team applies engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI.
- Perform quality reviews to check for inaccuracies, omissions, or compliance issues, and provide recommendations.
- Work collaboratively with engineers and project teams to develop solutions and modifications as needed.
- Maintain detailed project documentation and support engineering calculations.
- Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the stakeholders.
- Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is highly desirable; this is required for the Design Engineer 4 band.
- Curiosity for and willingness to learn about the major components of a substation is required. Basic knowledge of these components is a plus. Previous design or construction experience is highly desirable.
- No experience required in the electric utility industry for entry level positions. More experience performing detailed design for high voltage substation projects could result in a higher-level position.
- Word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail software.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Working in a team environment.
- Communicating effectively with co-workers.
- Able to deal with ambiguity and ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and determine priorities in a complex environment.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Role will require travel as necessary to achieve job responsibilities, up to 10-25% of the time.
WHAT YOU'LL GET:
- Competitive salary – overtime is available.
- Comprehensive health and retirement benefits.
- Professional development opportunities.

Align your credentials to energy project requirements
Quanta designs and builds transmission, distribution, and pipeline infrastructure. Tailor your resume to reflect experience with electrical systems, civil engineering, or structural design relevant to energy projects before applying.
Target roles matching your current visa category
Quanta sponsors F-1 CPT and OPT in addition to H-1B and TN. If you're still in school, apply for internships or co-op roles that qualify for CPT authorization so you start building a track record with the company early.
Use Migrate Mate to surface Design Engineer openings
Quanta posts Design Engineer roles across multiple regional offices and project sites. Use Migrate Mate to filter for visa-sponsored positions at Quanta so you're applying to the listings where sponsorship is confirmed, not guessing.
Understand the LCA requirements before your offer stage
For H-1B sponsorship, Quanta must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL certifying your offered wage meets the prevailing rate for your location. Ask your recruiter which wage level they intend to file at so there are no surprises at the offer stage.
Verify TN eligibility if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
Design Engineering roles at Quanta can qualify for TN status under the Engineers category if your degree is in engineering and the job duties align. TN requires no petition and can be obtained at the border, making it faster than H-1B for eligible applicants.
Prepare a project portfolio demonstrating field-relevant technical work
Quanta evaluates Design Engineers on applied technical output, not just academic credentials. Compile drawings, specifications, or project deliverables from past roles or internships that demonstrate hands-on design work in energy, utilities, or heavy infrastructure environments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group sponsor H-1B visas for Design Engineers?
Yes, Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group sponsors H-1B visas for Design Engineer roles. The company is a registered H-1B employer and has filed petitions for engineering talent in the energy sector. Because H-1B sponsorship involves a lottery each April for cap-subject candidates, timing your application and having your employer ready to file promptly in March is critical.
How do I apply for Design Engineer jobs at Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group?
You can apply directly through Quanta's careers portal or through Migrate Mate, which lists visa-sponsored Design Engineer openings at Quanta in one place. When applying, tailor your resume to energy infrastructure projects and specify your current visa status clearly so the recruiting team can assess sponsorship requirements from the start.
Which visa types does Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group commonly use for Design Engineers?
Quanta sponsors H-1B, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and TN visas for Design Engineer positions. F-1 CPT and OPT are common entry points for recent engineering graduates, while H-1B is the standard long-term work authorization pathway. TN is an efficient option for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose degree and job duties meet the Engineers category under USMCA.
What qualifications does Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group expect from Design Engineer candidates?
Quanta typically looks for a bachelor's degree in electrical, civil, mechanical, or structural engineering, depending on the specific project team. Hands-on experience with design software used in transmission, distribution, or pipeline infrastructure is valued. For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning a relevant engineering degree must be a standard requirement for the position.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take when starting a Design Engineer role at Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group?
Timeline depends on visa type. TN sponsorship can be obtained at a port of entry the same day for qualifying Canadian nationals. H-1B sponsorship for cap-subject candidates requires filing in April with an October 1 start date, meaning a gap of roughly six months between registration and work authorization. OPT can bridge that gap if you have remaining authorized time. USCIS premium processing, available for an additional fee, reduces the H-1B adjudication window to 15 business days.
