WHAT YOU'LL DO:
The Design Engineer - Substation will perform substation design assignments including physical layout and protection & control systems while ensuring compliance with safety and construction standards. This role involves designing substation components, selecting materials, preparing design documents, and collaborating with engineers and field personnel to ensure project accuracy and efficiency. This position will report to a Supervising Engineer and be part of a substation design team with other engineers, designers, and drafters supporting substation projects across the QISG platform. There are four bands to this title; an employee moves up in band as they gain experience and demonstrate mastery of new skills.
- Design physical substation components, including yard layouts, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, raceways, and auxiliary AC/DC power systems.
- Develop protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, cable lists and panel layouts.
- Develop design drawings, calculations, and bills of material from engineering documents for planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
- Conduct engineering calculations, including voltage drop, cable pulling, flicker analysis, and grounding analysis.
- Ensure project team applies engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI.
- Perform quality reviews to check for inaccuracies, omissions, or compliance issues, and provide recommendations.
- Work collaboratively with engineers and project teams to develop solutions and modifications as needed.
- Maintain detailed project documentation and support engineering calculations.
- Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the stakeholders.
- Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is highly desirable; this is required for the Design Engineer 4 band.
- Curiosity for and willingness to learn about the major components of a substation is required. Basic knowledge of these components is a plus. Previous design or construction experience is highly desirable.
- No experience required in the electric utility industry for entry level positions. More experience performing detailed design for high voltage substation projects could result in a higher-level position.
- Word processing, spreadsheet, and email software.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Working in a team environment.
- Communicating effectively with co-workers.
- Able to deal with ambiguity and ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and determine priorities in a complex environment.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Role will require travel as necessary to achieve job responsibilities, up to 10-25% of the time.

Align your credentials to energy infrastructure standards
Quanta's Software Design Engineer roles sit at the intersection of software and physical infrastructure systems. Frame your resume around embedded systems, SCADA, grid software, or industrial control experience to match the technical context reviewers expect.
Target roles that match your current visa status
Quanta sponsors F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, and TN visas in addition to H-1B. If you're a Canadian or Mexican national, TN classification under the USMCA for engineers is a faster path that bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely.
Search open Software Design Engineer positions on Migrate Mate
Quanta posts Software Design Engineer openings across multiple subsidiaries and regions. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group roles that are open to visa sponsorship, so you're not applying blind.
Start OPT paperwork before your program ends
If you're on F-1 OPT, USCIS recommends filing your EAD application at least 90 days before your program end date. Quanta's hiring timelines for engineering roles can run several weeks, so a gap between graduation and authorization creates real risk.
Ask directly about the H-1B filing timeline during offers
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed for an October 1 start date. When you receive an offer, confirm whether Quanta's legal team will file in the March registration window and what documentation they need from you in advance.
Verify your offer letter references LCA-level prevailing wage
Before signing, confirm your offered salary meets the DOL prevailing wage for Software Design Engineers in the specific work location. Quanta must file a certified Labor Condition Application with the DOL before your H-1B or H-1B1 visa petition can proceed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group sponsor H-1B visas for Software Design Engineers?
Yes, Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group has sponsored H-1B visas for Software Design Engineers. Because the company operates across energy infrastructure projects nationwide, sponsorship decisions are often tied to the specific subsidiary and project location. Confirm sponsorship availability with the recruiter early in the process, before advancing to technical interviews, since not every open role at every business unit will include H-1B sponsorship.
How do I apply for Software Design Engineer jobs at Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group?
Applications go through Quanta's careers portal, where Software Design Engineer postings appear under specific subsidiary brands as well as the parent company. You can also find and filter Quanta's open Software Design Engineer roles by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate. Tailor your application to highlight systems-level software experience relevant to energy infrastructure, since hiring teams here evaluate both software depth and domain context.
Which visa types does Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group commonly use for Software Design Engineers?
Quanta sponsors H-1B, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT for Software Design Engineers, along with TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals who qualify under the USMCA engineer category. TN is worth prioritizing if you're eligible, as there is no lottery and no annual cap. H-1B remains the most common long-term path and requires a cap registration in March for an October 1 start.
What qualifications does Quanta Infrastructure Solutions Group expect for Software Design Engineer roles?
Most Software Design Engineer postings at Quanta expect a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, software engineering, or a closely related field. Practical experience with industrial software systems, firmware, or infrastructure-facing applications strengthens an application significantly. Roles in energy often require familiarity with standards relevant to utility or grid environments, so highlighting project work in those areas gives your application more specificity than general software portfolios.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take if I receive a Software Design Engineer offer from Quanta?
Timeline depends on visa type. F-1 OPT authorization from USCIS can take up to 90 days from the filing date, so file early. TN classification for Canadian citizens is granted at the port of entry and can be same-day. H-1B sponsorship requires filing during the March lottery window, with employment starting no earlier than October 1. Factor these timelines into your start date conversation with Quanta's recruiter before accepting an offer.
