Compensation Analyst Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a compensation analyst in Virginia?
Most compensation analyst roles in Virginia require a bachelor's degree in human resources, business, finance, or a closely related field. There is no state-issued Virginia license for this role, but earning the Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) credential through WorldatWork significantly strengthens your candidacy, particularly with federal contractors in Northern Virginia. Employers in the Richmond and Hampton Roads markets also value experience with HRIS platforms and demonstrated knowledge of FLSA and federal pay regulations.
How much do compensation analysts make in Virginia?
Compensation analysts in Virginia earn a median of about $81,190 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $54,410 for the lowest 10% to over $136,030 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire compensation analysts in Virginia?
Employers hiring compensation analysts in Virginia right now include Ability Builders Consulting, Capital One, and PRA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal contractors, defense agencies, and major health systems means demand is spread across both large corporate HR departments and specialized government-aligned organizations.
Which Virginia cities have the most compensation analyst jobs?
Norfolk, Richmond, and Arlington have the most compensation analyst openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia dominates because of its dense cluster of federal contractors and technology firms headquartered along the I-495 and Route 1 corridors, while Richmond draws demand from financial services companies and major health systems, and Virginia Beach reflects the large military and defense employer base anchoring the Hampton Roads economy.
Are there remote compensation analyst jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields, since compensation analysis is desk-based and data-driven work that translates well to remote environments. About 100% of compensation analyst openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how broadly employers have accepted distributed HR teams. Benchmarking, data modeling, and HRIS administration tasks are the functions most commonly performed fully remotely.
How can I get hired as a compensation analyst in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving from an adjacent HR coordinator, payroll specialist, or financial analyst role into a junior compensation analyst position. Large Virginia employers such as Booz Allen Hamilton, Inova Health System, and Dominion Energy regularly bring on HR generalists and HRIS administrators who build toward compensation-specific work. Completing the WorldatWork foundational courses, building an Excel-based compensation modeling portfolio, and targeting HR analyst rotational programs at Northern Virginia federal contractors gives candidates without direct experience a concrete edge.
Where can I find and apply to compensation analyst jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to compensation analyst jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings from employers actively hiring right now. Find roles that fit your experience and apply directly to each one.
