Tax Senior Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax senior in Virginia?
Becoming a tax senior in Virginia typically requires a bachelor's degree in accounting and a CPA license issued or recognized by the Virginia Board of Accountancy, which oversees licensing in the state. Most employers require several years of progressive tax experience in public accounting or a corporate tax department. Passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination and meeting Virginia's education and experience requirements are the foundational steps.
How much do tax seniors make in Virginia?
Tax seniors in Virginia earn a median of about $93,290 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $60,000 for the lowest 10% to over $156,730 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax seniors in Virginia?
Employers hiring tax seniors in Virginia right now include Amazon, CohnReznick, and BDO, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal contractors, Big Four and regional accounting firms, and Fortune 500 financial services headquarters creates a steady pipeline of tax senior openings across the state.
Which Virginia cities have the most tax senior jobs?
McLean, Arlington, and Richmond are the Virginia cities with the most tax senior openings. Northern Virginia's density of federal contractors and technology firms drives the bulk of demand, while Richmond's status as a corporate and financial services hub sustains consistent hiring, and Virginia Beach anchors activity in the Hampton Roads region for both public accounting firms and regional businesses.
Are there remote tax senior jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields, since tax senior work is analytical and document-driven rather than on-site or hands-on. About 52% of tax senior openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting broader flexibility across the accounting profession. Tax compliance, research, and review work tend to be the most remote-friendly functions within the role.
How can I get hired as a tax senior in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a staff accountant or associate tax role at a Virginia public accounting firm or a corporate tax department, then building toward senior-level work over two to three years. Large Virginia employers such as regional CPA firms and federal contractors regularly hire new graduates for entry-level tax associate positions. Passing the CPA exam early and gaining exposure to federal and Virginia state tax returns accelerates the progression significantly.
