Compliance Officer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a compliance officer in California?
Most compliance officer roles in California require a bachelor's degree in business, law, finance, or a related field, followed by experience in a regulatory, legal, or audit function. California does not issue a state-specific compliance license, but employers strongly favor candidates with the Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP) credential from the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics. Healthcare roles often also expect familiarity with California's patient privacy laws.
How much do compliance officers make in California?
Compliance officers in California earn a median of about $96,980 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $57,530 for the lowest 10% to over $158,280 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire compliance officers in California?
Employers hiring compliance officers in California right now include State Street, First American, and Jobot, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of financial institutions, health systems, biotechnology firms, and technology companies means the employer base is unusually broad compared to most states.
Which California cities have the most compliance officer jobs?
Los Angeles, Irvine, and San Francisco account for the largest share of compliance officer openings in California. Los Angeles and San Francisco lead because of their dense clusters of financial services firms, health systems, and corporate headquarters, while San Diego draws consistent demand from its large life sciences and defense contracting sectors.
Are there remote compliance officer jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. Compliance work is largely desk-based, document-driven, and policy-focused, which makes it well suited to remote arrangements. About 22% of compliance officer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how widely California employers have adopted flexible work for this role. Regulatory review, policy writing, and training delivery are the functions most commonly performed fully remotely.
How can I get hired as a compliance officer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a lateral move from a related role such as paralegal, auditor, risk analyst, or regulatory affairs coordinator, where you already handle compliance-adjacent work. Large California health systems like Kaiser Permanente and Dignity Health, as well as major financial institutions headquartered in the state, run compliance associate or analyst programs for candidates without direct compliance titles. Earning the CCEP entry-level certificate or completing a California-accredited paralegal program gives candidates a concrete edge when applying to these openings.
Where can I find and apply to compliance officer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to compliance officer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries. Find roles that fit your experience and specialization and apply directly to each one.
