Start with a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, which is the baseline requirement for virtually every cost accountant role in New Jersey. While New Jersey does not require a state license to work as a cost accountant, pursuing CPA licensure through the New Jersey State Board of Accountancy gives candidates a clear competitive edge. Most employers in the state's pharmaceutical and manufacturing sectors also value the CMA credential from the Institute of Management Accountants.
How much do cost accountants make in New Jersey?
Cost accountants in New Jersey earn a median of about $100,830 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $65,710 for the lowest 10% to over $167,080 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cost accountants in New Jersey?
Employers hiring cost accountants in New Jersey right now include PALFINGER, Celularity, and Astrodyne TDI, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New Jersey's concentration of pharmaceutical, chemical, and diversified manufacturing companies means cost accountant demand is especially sustained in the central and northern parts of the state.
Which New Jersey cities have the most cost accountant jobs?
Trenton, Vineland, and Burlington County have the most cost accountant openings in New Jersey. Newark's density of financial services and corporate headquarters drives volume there, while Princeton and Parsippany attract openings through the large pharmaceutical and specialty chemical companies headquartered in the Route 1 and Morris County corridors.
Are there remote cost accountant jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, and they are more common for cost accountants than for many accounting roles, since much of the work centers on analysis, reporting, and ERP systems rather than on-site physical inventory counts. About 40% of cost accountant openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of September 2026. Month-end close tasks and variance reporting are the functions most frequently performed fully remote.
How can I get hired as a cost accountant in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing an accounts payable, accounts receivable, or general ledger staff accountant role at a New Jersey manufacturer or pharmaceutical company, then moving internally into cost accounting. Large employers like Honeywell and Johnson & Johnson run rotational finance development programs that place recent graduates into cost-related functions. Earning the CMA credential early signals commitment to management accounting and helps candidates stand out when competing for junior cost analyst openings.
