Crew Leader Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a crew leader in California?
Most crew leaders in California start in a skilled trade or labor role and advance after demonstrating field competence and the ability to direct others. For construction-related positions, completing a state-approved apprenticeship through the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards strengthens candidacy. Landscaping roles often favor candidates who hold a California Qualified Applicator Certificate from the Department of Pesticide Regulation when chemical applications are involved. A clean California driver's license is typically required across industries.
How much do crew leaders make in California?
Crew leaders in California earn a median of about $76,840 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,530 for the lowest 10% to over $125,440 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire crew leaders in California?
Employers hiring crew leaders in California right now include Fresh Harvest, Brightview, and BrightView Landscapes, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's scale in commercial landscaping, infrastructure construction, and large-scale agriculture means that both regional contractors and national service companies maintain ongoing crew leader hiring throughout the year.
Which California cities have the most crew leader jobs?
The cities with the most crew leader openings in California are Salinas, Gilroy, and Irvine. This distribution reflects the concentration of commercial construction and facilities management in major urban centers, while agricultural regions like the Central Valley drive demand in Fresno and surrounding areas where large farming operations require seasonal and permanent crew supervision.
Are there remote crew leader jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Crew leader roles are inherently hands-on, requiring direct on-site supervision of workers, which limits remote options. About 0% of crew leader openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to involve scheduling, reporting, or coordination duties rather than field supervision itself.
How can I get hired as a crew leader in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is starting as a general laborer or crew member with a contractor or landscaping company, then moving into a lead worker role within the same team. Large California employers in commercial landscaping and construction regularly promote from within when workers show reliability and the ability to train others. Enrolling in a California Division of Apprenticeship Standards program in construction or a related trade, or obtaining a forklift or equipment operator certification, gives candidates a clear edge when applying to supervisory roles.
Where can I find and apply to crew leader jobs in California?
You can find and apply to crew leader jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
