Developer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a developer in New York?
New York does not require a state-issued license to work as a software developer. Most employers in New York hire based on demonstrated technical ability, with a bachelor's degree in computer science or engineering being the most common credential. Candidates without a four-year degree are hired through bootcamp programs, community college pathways, or strong portfolio work. New York City in particular has a robust tech ecosystem with many employers who prioritize skills assessments over credentials.
How much do developers make in New York?
Developers in New York earn a median of about $166,180 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $97,430 for the lowest 10% to over $224,590 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire developers in New York?
Employers hiring developers in New York right now include Capgemini, Citi, and Photon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's concentration of financial institutions, media companies, and large healthcare networks means developer demand stays consistent across industries well beyond the traditional tech sector.
Which New York cities have the most developer jobs?
New York, Albany, and Buffalo are the New York cities with the most developer openings. New York City dominates due to its density of financial services firms, media companies, and tech startups, while Buffalo and Albany have grown as regional hubs driven by state government technology initiatives, university-affiliated research centers, and expanding healthcare systems that all require significant software development capacity.
Are there remote developer jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 66% of developer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how thoroughly desk-based the work is. Back-end and cloud infrastructure roles tend to have the highest share of fully remote arrangements, while roles embedded with in-person product or trading teams in New York City are more likely to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a developer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate or junior developer role at a mid-size New York company where you can grow quickly. Large New York employers like JPMorgan Chase and IBM run structured new-grad and apprenticeship programs that target candidates without professional experience. Adjacent roles such as QA analyst, technical support specialist, or data analyst are common lateral entry points. A strong GitHub portfolio or a recognized bootcamp certificate gives New York candidates a meaningful edge when applying without prior job titles.
Where can I find and apply to developer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to developer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings in the state. Find the roles that fit your experience and specialty, then apply directly to the ones that match.
